One problem I have had with this very long (7+ years) restoration, is that things are misplaced and things are forgotten. Case in point, several weeks ago the shop called to report that the rolling chassis was ready and would I like to drop by for a look - see. I was very pleased, but pleasure turned to disappointment when I closely examined the intake manifold. This is my 3A engine TS58525E, but the manifold appears to belong to a 4 or 4A. Correct?

Last night was the first opportunity I had to search for the original manifold. I think I found it, but I am not sure. here are some pics I took. There is a casting number - hard to make out, but ending in 119.

Please , could you chime in and provide a consensus? if not correct, maybe I can find one at Stoneleigh!

Cheers, Frank

Frank, the manifold with the boss would have been on some 3B and possibly even some very late 3A, but I'm pretty sure it's not correct for your earlier 3A.

Don't know the casting number, but the other one looks correct to me.

Does anyone have a Piggott TR3 book? I lent mine out, but from memory I believe that is a TR4A manifold.

The manifold that you have on the engine is from a later TR4 I'm fairly sure. Its the same manifold that was on my TR3 and I believe I recall tracking that info down, because I knew it wasnt't correct for my car. The previous owner was a doctor in Charleston, SC and he reportedly raced it. I figured it was a performance upgrade. I drilled the boss and installed a fitting for a vaccuum gauge.

According to Roger Williams "how to restore a Triumph TR2 tr3 & tr3a", chapter 10, the "third type" intake manifold is cast as 302119, while the "second type" casting is 302006.

The "first type" is TR2 only. "Second type" low port heads. "Third type" high port heads, H6 carbs. "4th type" is what it looks you have mounted (tr3b tr4).

Aloha Frank,

I think you found the correct intake manifold. It looks like the one fitted on my engine TS28418E. The one with the boss on the cross tube is probably from a early TR4 engine up to CT21470E. As Randall points out it many be found on some TR3Bs. The only reference available to me at work is the Moss catalog, but it indicates the TR3 series did not have bosses on the cross tube.

OK, this is fronm the "Enthusiast's Restoration Manual" series. There were six manifolds on the 4 cyl. engines. The first was for the 1 1/2" carbs and low port heads. The second type (TR3) has casting #302006, also for low port heads, but w/1 3/4" carbs. The third type (casting #302119) was for TR3-3A high port heads. The forth type came with the bosses cast into the middle of the balance tube. They were put on late TR3A's to early TR4's. The last two were for later TR4's and both have the upward curved balance tubes. Unfortunately, there is no info in the book concerning at what point (commision number) these changes took place.

Hope this helps.

Yes, his 2 manifolds are 3rd and 4th types (4th on engine, 3rd the one he found.
Depending on the year of your 3, most likley the 3rd type is the correct one, but the 4th would work just fine, and if you showed the engine to 1000 people, you'd be lucky if 2 of them spotted it as incorrect.
On the later TR4A manifolds the 2 runner sets (cyl 1-2, cyl 3-4) curve in and merge togeather gently instead of going straight into the cross-tube area. It was said to give the best performance of all the manifolds, but they don't fit very well in a TR3 without slight mods.
I have a Type 1 , 2 bolt carb low port head, a type 4 late TR3 high port, and a Type6 Tr4A.
Since I don't have the carbs for the Type 1 My Tr2 will most likley get the Type 4 Unless I can make the TR4A one fit.
