Help From Inspector Gadget Types

How about a make-shift step ladder from a pair of 20' extension ladders? Or if you don't have two of them, splice some 2x4s together to form the back side. Make it good and wide, then have someone help steady the ladder while you are on it.

If you have the room don....

Do those pull chains do what you want? Maybe put some extensions on those that could be reached from a 4' or 6' ladder.

What about the 8 lamp chandelier in my entry.
Same height
An entry chandelier is decorative as well as providing light for the area. The lighting requirements for a family room are different than for an entry. I would always recommend an attractive chandelier in an entry. Having said all that, I have done what I think are the dumbest things with lighting. All at the request of the homeowner of course.

This is in an interesting location
In our neighborhood they seem more decorative than functional.
There's usually is a window in front of it to the street.

Great idea Greg if I didn't have to look at the chains.
Still would need a tall ladder to reach the fan.
Also the fact that the slowest speed is still to fast, is not fixed

I wonder if the motor has wiring options to run at different speeds... maybe you could investigate the install instructions from the manufacturer.

Won't know that until I get up there, Elliot
Any way about it I want to be able to control speed and direction from floor
I just can't believe a house built in 2007-08 would not run 14/3 leg to the fan

You might be able to find out before you climb up there if you had the wiring instructions. It could very well be that there is options for a "Hi" and "Low" speed options on the motor. In any case, be careful up there!

Don very few fans allow you to change direction from a remote control. Casablanca does with its Intelatouch. If you are thinking of an aftermarket remote control kit I think you are out of luck. As far as 14/2 vs 14/3 to the fan, I gave up trying to guess what other electricians think.

If there is it is a standard slow speed.
That is just way to much air.
It creates a breeze instead of stirring the air
Anyone who has had a Casablanca fan knows what it is like to be able to slow the speed way down and be able to reverse direction with a push of a button

If the fans are anything like the one in my office
1 speed -Hurricane

... In any case, be careful up there!

SWMBO has already warned me NOT to do this until she gets back from Long Beach.

My old neighbor built a huge house and was cleaning the windows on the second floor entry and fell off a ladder because of a suspected heart attack.
Bled out on the floor as his wife was at work

Update- Guess the fan in the office is 2 speed. OOPS:eek:

Sounds like a good idea Don.... follow her instructions.

All fans are 3 speed to the best of my knowledge. If you are going through all this trouble to get up there I would recommend a nice Casablance fan with or without light. Do it once and do right.

As Mike Holmes would do......bring in scaffolding, start setting it up underneath the fan. When you get it high enough, climb the scaffolding and fix it.
Then remove the scaffolding.
Whatreya, new?
