I found this on the web and checked it out. it is accurate. One loophole is that products are often made in China and elsewhere and then re-packaged in the US and sold here. otherwise this is good info. :yesnod:

GREAT WAY TO "BUY USA & CANADA AND NOT CHINA!!

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA .

471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public,
therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 ... then it is MADE IN CHINA .
00 - 09 ... USA & CANADA
30 - 37 ... FRANCE
40 - 44 ... GERMANY
47 ... Taiwan
49 ... JAPAN
50 ... UK
57 ~ Denmark
64 ~ Finland
76 ~ Switzerland and Lienchtenstein
471 ~ Taiwan
628 ~ Saudi-Arabia
629 ~ United Arab Emirates
740-745 ~ Central America
All 480 Codes ~ The Philippines

BUY USA & CANADIAN MADE by watching
for "0" at the beginning of the number.

Fruit of the Loom tee shirts used to be made right here in Louisiana. They were good paying jobs with good health and dental benefits. The ladies worked hard, but made a living wage. Some years ago they closed all the factories and went to Central America. Then they went to China. Lower wages and no benefits. The factory in Jeanerette, LA is still open and acts as a distribution center for the shirts they import from overseas. The shirts come in with Made in China labels and the skeleton crew left over here have to remove the labels and re-sew in Made in USA labels. For distribution to WalMart and other stores. True story. Several of my patients work there.

I just checked several bar coded items here in the house that I know are US or Chinese and didn't find any correct corresponding codes. Either this is a brand new thing, or it isn't neccessarily 100%.
Example, A V-TECH childs game stamped made in China, but the first three are 417.

A made in USA CD with first 3 of 206

But a bottle of Vaseline with an accurate 05.

According to the snopes article, the bar code has more to do with where the bar code was assigned, not necessarily where the product was made.
