Help - Flame Thrower coil

I installed a Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition in my BJ8 today. I had also intended to install a Flame Thrower coil, but ran into a snag. The distributor lead that I have is threaded and slightly too large in diameter to fit into the coil tower. My old Lucas coil tower is threaded as well, obviously. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would a new distributor cap have a push-in lead that would work with this new coil?

BTW, the electronic ignition is working great with the old coil. The car starts up very easily and runs great. Should I just return the new coil and stay with what is working well?

Thanks!

Hi Kent,
You would probably be just as well off with the old coil.

I think that with a proper modern style end clip on the wire, it will securely plug into the new coil. Leave off the threaded collar though.

Just for kicks, I ran the proper size tap into the new coil tower, it only cut a partial depth thread, & screwed the Lucas fitting into it. If there is any question about your machining abilities, don't try this. It would be very easy to break the coil tower. I used a lathe turned by hand & only advanced the tap about 1/8 turn before backing off, cleaning, & relubing with cutting oil. Don't try tapping by hand, as any side pressure would likely break the coil tower.

Thanks Dave. Maybe I'll just stay with the old coil for the time being.

Oh, and one other question - There were two wires hooked up to the positive side of the coil originally. Following the instructions for the Ignitor I ended up with an extra wire from the negative terminal. It is cream colored (dirty white?) and black stripe. I've secured it out of the way for now, but want to know what it was for and if it needs to be hooked up or not. Thanks!

There would originally have been a black/white wire on the plus (positive, or CB) coil terminal, distributor side, that gets grounded when the battery cutoff switch is operated. It needs to be taped & stowed out of the way. What puzzles me is that you said the negative terminal. Your car must have been converted from positive to negative ground?
