HELP!!! Can't get the retaining ring back on!

Help!... I am in the middle of replacing my rear wheel cylinders on my 70 Midget and can't get the retaining ring back to the cylinder. Any ideas? The retaining clip is not the usual circlip that was on the old cylinder. (see below)

Aggravating, aren't they.

Start with ear of the clip in the groove, the use a screw driver to pop the middle, and then the other side.

Different people have different methods. Some people can even make it look easy. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

and i believe that you must orient the open part of the clip toward the bleeder hole.

I saved the old rings and used them instead of the ones that came with my new cylinders.
I also bought the circlip tool.

At least make darn sure the washer is there before you reconnect and bleed the hydraulics. Don't ask me how I know. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

Thanks everyone...I just got back from the parts store and bought some new circlips and a circlip tool. I went through the repair kit that I purchased from VB and can't find a "Belleville(sp?) washer. Wavy spring metal thing. " I also looked at the exploded view of the rear brake in the catalog and I'm trying to figure out what you are refering to.

What I like best about these boards even more than the almost Forrest Gump-like level of honesty and candor is the fact that given that we all seem to have to reassemble our cars at least twice. ergo - we all have at least twice the experience we actually think we have. Myself, although I have only ever owned one Midget can (reasonably honestly say, "I've built three." (don't ask me how I know /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif )

The washer is used to keep the wheel (slave) cylinder against the back plate to reduce the possibility of the shoes rubbing the drum. (at least that is my theory) A flat washer of appropriate size might work just as well. A bearing supplier would have belleville washers in stock.

That's what friends are for, Jeff... actually, I'm always a bit jealous of the tool collections of my more experienced friends. The right tool for the job is, well, the right tool for the job.

Didn't know they were still available. May have to invest a bit once I get to the brake rebuild stage...

I've been collecting that tool for a long time now.
With a True Value hardware store literally across the street it is sometimes easier & faster to go over there and buy a new one rather than try to figure out where my old one is.
