Just got my head back and I took out all the studs from block and head and am in the process of replacing all new. Got to the head to exhaust manifold studs and found out that Moss sent me studs that have two different threads. The studs I removed (two with great difficulty, ie, destroyed)had 5/16-24 UNF on both ends, the ones I was ready to replace with had 5/16-24 UNF on the nut end and 5/16-18 UNC on the head end. I bought the 328-718 Stud and nut set and this is what I got. I checked the Moss catalog and the same stud set is used whether you're using HS-4's or HIF-4's (don't see why it would make any difference). Can anybody help me out here? The nuts supplied by Moss, by the way, are 5/16-24 UNF. I don't see any other studs available, either.
Help, please! I've already lost two months of driving waiting on getting the head back.
Thanks

The studs moss sent are absolutely right for early and later 18v heads I just installed a set tonight on the 73. You may have run into a previous dpo mod.

What studs did you use for the head into the block? If it was the moss ones use caution when torquing them. I had a 2 strip when bringing them up to the final spec.Others have had them snap.

Looking thru the Moss catalog (p.23 & p.25) I found two other studs which are the same size thread (5/16). Is it possible one of these would be threaded both ends 5/16-24 and could be used?

Methinks somebody's been messing with your block...I think they should be coarse going down in there.

Not the block studs, the cylinder head to exhaust manifold studs. Talked with my mechanic and he suggested just using 5/16-24 bolts to the correct length. Any problem doing this?
