Hi all, life long classic car/bike junkie... glad to be part of the forum. We're currently in Cirencester, GLOS, UK but will be back in the states, somewhere, by October. We picked up a '72 Leyland Mini (second owner) that we'll be bringing home. Look forward to getting more familiar with this site and the British car culture in the US.

BTW, you might want to double-check on bringing your Mini across the pond. I'm not sure of the current status offhand, but the USA passed both emission and crash standards starting in 1968 and I believe there are still restrictions on bringing in cars made after 1968 that do not have the appropriate emissions certifications. The crash standards are waived for anything over 25 years old, but I don't believe that is true of emission standards.

PS, I read down further and see that there is an exemption for cars over 21 years old, provided it is "in original unmodified configuration" and "the written EPA approval must be obtained before the vehicle is cleared at Customs".

So I'm worrying over nothing. Sorry bout that.
 
I'd second the check on the status.

I thought that cars older than a certain age were exempt:

Which seems to exempt cars that are more than 21 years old from these rules...

Edited to add, also see section 3, part c for foreign vehicles:

So it looks like it's probably OK, but you'd do well to check first.


BUT I also understand that individual STATES (like California which I believe is more restrictive) may have supplemental rules that can restrict what they allow... so you may need to check at both Federal and State levels
 
I think James is right.

Based on what guidance we've been given and the info read on the sites James cites above, we should be okay. We have the registration and a Heritage Certificate which prove the car is 37 years old. As so far as states go, we do know it will be placed somewhere in the KY, TN, AR, OK, GA area so that should not be an issue either.

Welcome! It should be no issue with a "pedigree" like Heritage Cert. 'specially GA or AR.
