I personally believe that the 'frail southern belle' is a myth perpetrated by the Northern agressors - the southern girls I've met have almost always been strong-willed and able to give any man a run for his money - which is what I find so appealing about them! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif I've been married to one for 24 years and she 'don't put up with no stuff from nobody!' as the saying goes
 
Every Southern belle (get the capitalization correct, folks) I ever met was a mean woman doun deep inside!

It probably has more to do with the fact they have to deal with Southern men - who aren't the stupid redneck so popularly protrayed, but who do tend to be hard-headed and not 'in touch with their feminine side'

At least we're now getting the capitalization correct....South, Southern....same with West, Westerner (oops, at least until Brokeback Mountain)...nor sure about east, north or midwest...though New England definitely qualifies....
