hello healey gang - culd u take a quick look plz

I'm not sure what the price is in US to compare but there is a lot of body and frame rust. Rust is like an iceberg, only the top 30% shows. It may be a good car for the price, being a tri-carb. Nothing looks un-restorable but the money could be a problem. As has always been said here, buy the best car you can afford.

Strange that there is no paint, only rust visible on the frame considering the claim of a frame-off restoration in ’92. Just curious, is that where the brake reservoir goes on a RHD?

Soren, I think if this car was restored in 92 it has lived a hard life since then. Looks like alot of rust and wavey bondo work from what I can see. I wouldn't even consider it for the money they are asking with out having someone experienced with working on Healeys inspecting it in person.
Maybe it could make a good car but from what I think I see I don't like. Bob

Re: hello healey gang - culd u take a quick look

That auction is currently bid over 18K USD and reserve is not met - pictures posted show extensive rust, poor body panels, damage etc and from what I can see extensive work is needed in most areas. Assuming the seller posted the best pictures he had to obtain a good sale price, this is extremely concerning /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif JMHO. Something this questionable just on initial review has to be looked at closely and with caution, good luck on your eval /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Its in less than great shape and would need some work.

The photos are particularly poor. I'd want better ones and wouldn't be inclined to accept excuses. The lighting is very bad. The focus is poor. Apart from the close-up of the boot lid none of the areas of concern that show rust are closely viewed.

I often look at what the seller's bought and sold in the past to help screen for frauds- this one had bought a lot of women's wear (check out the belly dancing hip scarves- quite education, e-bay, sometimes) but then I found a few auto-related items.

I note they bought a wing in rather poor condition (auction item 4606777752); and if that was better than what's on the car I'd be very, very concerned.

Note too the guide prices from Practical Classics Magazine- poor- ÂŁ6.5K, average ÂŁ11K, excellent ÂŁ17K; though their site doesn't explain the definitions the print edition does.

It might be useful knowing who did the "body-off" restoration and what was done; and if the current owner was the one that either did the work or had it done.

If exported to the USA as a LHD car its been converted to RHD; and the car's serial number should tell you whether it was originally Left or right handed. The oil pan appears to be an alloy one, and it may have had some modifications too when the engine was rebuilt in 2003.

On the plus side its just passed its MOT (Jan., 2006 good til Jan. 2007) so the car's been inspected and is considered safe and roadworthy. This MOT GUIDE explains what gets checked a little more fully.

The mileage given (2900) seems unbelievable. As others have noted there seems to be a lot of rust on the frame rails- particularly so for a car restored in the early 1990s and presumably garaged and lightly used since then; I'd expect some rust in Olde Englande but I'd expect to see some more of the paint too.

To venture an opinion: I'd say the bodywork appears to be in less than average condition and you can't see the mechanical bits to judge whether their condition is better, or not. With 10 hours left on the clock and the reserve not met I'm doubtful it'll sell. If its re-offered you might then have more time to get an inspection done- for this car, and that amount of money an inspection on the ground would be justified.

You could probably come over and drive it back to Denmark; having it transported would be rather expensive- I was quoted a cost ÂŁ500 for trucking a non-moving Healey from Eastern England to Scotland (400 miles).

soren ak,at $18,352.9 us dollars and they want more? i dont believe even a tricarb should warrant that kind of money for a car in that poor a shape. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

If it doesn't sell and you really want it you could contact the seller off line and make an offer of $5000 US (or what ever you are willing to pay). You've got nothing to loose. But you may take $20,000 to restore it to a respectable driver and a lot of time and work. They are asking alot for that car. For that kind of money I'd check the Healey magazine ads. I've seen great deals for $20,000

Its already three times the $5K- The value of these cars in the UK is rather higher thanin the US- which makes re-patriating them back to the UK an economically viable activity. The exchange rate (roughly $1.75=ÂŁ1) makes American cars and products relatively cheaper....

Or at least I hope so- for that's what I've done.

Besides which, a US specification car with LHD would be more suitable for continental Europe....

Look in the USA- you'll get a better car more suitable for your roads for your money, or for even less.

Hi Soren,

You can join the Austin-Healey Club of America and get its monthly publication, Healey Marque, by visiting the club website: AHCA. I'm the editor of Healey Marque so I'll decline to comment on its quality, but I do my best and I think you'd like it. It is the world's largest-circulation Healey-related publication, and beginning with the May issue we are permanently expanding to 36 pages in each issue, with 16 pages of color in each issue.

You can join the Austin-Healey Club USA and get its monthly publication, Austin-Healey Magazine, by visiting the club website: AHCUSA. I'm a former editor of Austin-Healey Magazine and it is also very much worth the money.

Good luck, and happy Healey reading!

P.S. I would NOT, under any circumstances, buy that Healey you're looking at on eBay, and I strongly advise you to keep shopping.
