I am the future owner of a very cute 1980 black and white checkered mini which I am having shipped from England. A year ago I would have seen one on the street and gotten all excited about it, but never really considered owning one (or any classic car) as a real possibility. My boyfriend then showed me that classic minis are affordable in the UK (hooray for ebay motors) and that overseas shipping is surprisingly reasonable.

Oh and that I can have one that's an automatic. I give you all complete permission to make fun of the fact that I can't drive manual.

If any of you are in the Baltimore area and see a mini with a checkered top, give me a wave!

~Melissa

Welcome, Melissa!

I don't know ANYONE here who would make fun of you for not knowing how to shift for yourself. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

The Mini sounds like great fun. Be sure to give us your impressions when you get it "home".

Hi Melissa,

Welcome!

I used to live in Northern VA and Baltimore was part of our stomping grounds. Will be flying in there around the 4th of July so if I see the checkered mini will remember to honk and wave. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

Did they switch your mini over to left hand drive?

Cheers,
John

Hi There Melissa & Welcome to the most Friendliest Place in town:

Your Mini looks like It`ll be a Blast to drive around especially if you get down to the Inner Harbor Area: I would guess you`ll probably get a Ton of Fares; Have Fun and Make Money at the same time! Life is Good!

Hi, Melissa, and welcome. I'm about 45 min north of you, I'll watch for the checkered top. Welcome to the forum!!

Oh good, I'll be sure to wave back! No, the car will be RHD. Any suggestions for paying for parking at lots or going through drive-throughs?

The RHD on my Daimler took a little getting used to! Welcom aboard! Hope o see you around here often!

Oh hey! I live in in the north east of the city and work in Mt Washington. I won't be getting my car for another few weeks, though...

Any suggestions on where to get my car serviced? I want to try and do as much as I can, but I at least want to have it looked over by someone who knows their stuff when I first get it in. I was told there was some place in Owings Mills near Maryland Public Television, but haven't gotten any more info than that.

Thanks!

I think a magnetic base chess piece on the lid would be in order... a queen, p'raps? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

It might be a little far for you (about 45 minutes), but in Mount Airy (go up interstate 70 from the Baltimore beltway, there's a place called Vintage Restorations. They do normal servicing and repairs, the owner's name is John Tokar - ask for him, tell him some guy in New Market referred you to him.
