Hello, and a question

Hello! I just stumbled across this forum and thought I would sign up. I have a 1977 Midget that I rescued from a friend's garage after having sat for 18 years, and it's been a fun project. It only has 29,000 miles on it, but sitting for so long wasn't kind to many parts, and it had a few problems before it quit on him back in 1985. After many new parts, and restoring a few items here and there, I've certainly learned a lot. If anything I thought this would be a place to share what I've learned or find new things. I can safely say that it's fine mechanically (everything works except for the fuel tank sender ), although I'm looking at overhauling the suspension pretty soon, so I got the front end kit from Moss, and new bushings for the rear.

My question is this. I have replaced all of the fluids in the car except for the shock oil. After searching on the Internet I found a bewildering array of what people think should go in them, but is motorcycle front fork oil basically what they would use? I see that Moss actually carries shock oil, but is that really the same stuff? I figured if I'm going to spruce up the suspension I might as well check on the shock oil while I'm under there .

Hello Dave,
Welcome to the Best Forum on the net...Period.

Ahhh.. shock oil. Been lots on that here. Feel Free to use the search feature at the top of the page. You will finds scads of info on the topic. But as you have noted, people put all kinds of stuff in them. I myself used M/C fork oil and it seemed to work quite well. But in the end i opted for Better than new rebuilds from worldwide auto of madison Wi.

Everyone loves World Wide Auto rebuilt lever shocks, myself included. Beats rotten apples to the core.
And I know Peter from WWAP and I know what he uses in his shox.
Straight 20 wt motor oil.
I have been to his shop, I have been to his tech sessions.

Welcome to the forum.

I've used Peter for various other items (not shocks) and he's a great source of info.

I live in Avon Lake, OH and also am restoring a Sprite that has sat for ~ 20 years. Feel free to e-mail me if you have some Q's @ gzeck@email.com

Thanks all for the info. I think I might be sending out to Moss for a bottle or two of their shock oil. Actually, the shocks seem to work okay and don't appear to be leaking, but maybe replacing the 28 year old oil would be a good thing. BTW, anybody have any tips on tackling the front suspension? I see I'll need to have the new king pin bushes reamed, but are there any particularly nasty parts to watch out for?
