Who has used helicons or time-serts in their carb bodies so one doesn't have to put nuts on the back of the carbs when installing K&N or other air cleaners? Fiddling with the bolt head or nut from the back side of the carb is a pain. I believe I have read that some have used helicons or time-serts in the carb so solve this problem.

What size helical or time-sert is used? In my case I am using HD6 carbs if that matters.

I've thought that was a great idea as I run my Tri carb without air cleaners since they are such a PITA to remove and re install. Would you have to go larger than 5/16" ? That is the size of the bolt but is there enough metal to set a helicoil in?
 
The drill size for 5/16 NC is very slightly larger than 5/16 (.3320 I think). The hole in my old H6 body smaller than the drill size so it should work fine. The result will be 5/16 threads with the insert. Good idea.

I used coupling nuts inside my K&Ns in combination with 5/16" allen screws inserted from the carb flange side:

Great idea, think I ll make up some threaded bushes thanks no more juggling and dropped nuts !!!!
 
For my BJ7 I have encapsulated the back of a couple of cheap pressed out spanners with a partial wrap of metal to hold the nuts in place, I have not tried them yet, as the idea was the result of the last carb removal/install, where I used insulation tape that kept coming unstuck. I will let you know how effective they are in due course.
