I have a 2000 Discovery II that the heater temp fluctuates. At an idle or low speed the heater blows cold. If I take it up to freeway speed it will blow very hot. Recently I replaced the water pump, and bled the cooling system. As this is my wife's driver I'm not sure when this phenomenon started. But I don't remember it prior to the water pump replacement. The temp gauge read normal through out the drive.
Any thoughts?

assuming that you aren't losing coolant i would try re-bleeding the coolant making sure the heater valve is open. my '89 rangie took three tries to get the coolant bled properly after a head gasket change.
 
No, I'm not losing coolant. I guess I'll try bleeding the system. Is there a way to make sure the heater valve is open. Does the system have to be up to operating temp?
"Sigh" Triumphs are so much simpler.

i'm not sure i've properly bled the coolant system in my '95 rangie yet. it did do a burp after a nice long ride on I5 last week. I try squeezing the upper radiator hose while I am filling the coolant system. The discos and newer rangies don't have the tower like the older rangies have that allow you to fill from the high point. I looked in my ahop manual and I didn't find a procedure for bleeding like i do in MR2 manuals.
 
ps taking my '95 rangie on a nice long road trip through the from eugene to arlington tx through california. maybe you'll see me on I5 tomorrow. Wife likes driving the rangie better than the TR7 -- it always does goofy stuff when she drives; like headlamps don't work, guages act up.
 
Well it took a few days to get back on line. I rebled the system, alot of air escaped, let it warm up and bled it again, almost no air.
Took the Disco out this weekend tested the heater at different speeds, and it maintained an even temp! With all your help, my wife thinks I'm a genius!

PS Hope you had a good trip Phil, unfortunately San Luis Obsipo is on the 101 ( coastal freeway) a prettier drive but much longer!
