Heater Operation

I believe there is a rubber grommet that seals the hole in the firewall. The hood release rod goes through the center of this grommet. Is yours missing?

Just had my 100-6 out after a 2 year build for the first time today in Phoenix. It was 105 degrees today and it did OK for a short trip. I Had a BJ8 back in 1978 here that I drove to work for 4 years and it was hot in summer but I had a drive where I could keep the speed up without much sitting at lights. I may be crazy but, I think the pleasure of driving a Healey far outweighs any inconvience of heat, etc.

The grommet is present but the hole seems large and the release rod seems to move off center as it is pulled. Maybe I just need to straighten it and get a new grommet.

We tried to turn the lever in order to close the valve, but it wouldn't move at all. How do we know if it is turned open or shut? And does anybody has any tips <font color="blue"> </font> for this problem? It seems that the lever from the valve is missing, all there is is a brass little ball with a threaded hole in it...
 
Hi Miranda, I forget the direction the handle is in when off.If it can not be moved do not force it as that is what has probably broken the control handle off of . Best to remove it and disassemble ,clean add antisieze to the valve and reinstall. A handle can be fabricated by drilling the ball tapping it 10 X 32 add a brass machine screw about 2" long and sheath it with brass tubing soldered up to almost look original. Or replace it with new. OH! if the hole in the little brass ball is pointing towards the out side of the car,away from the block, the valve is off---Keoke

We will try not to force anything. we might have to put up with the heater on in the Texas heat for a little longer, before we disassemble it. Once again thanks for the info

Get a machine screw about 2"long that will fit in the little hole, it does not need to thread in, to use as a handle. Now take a set of wire cutters{Dikes}6"-to-8"long. Slide the cutters up under the little ball and gently close the handle. Now apply gentle but increasing pressure on the handles in a downward direction this will prise the little ball up . When the little ball jumps up you are home. Now lift up on the makeshift handle rotate the little ball 90 Degrees.Take a thumb and press down on the little ball just to make sure it reseals because the spring in back may be a little tired.---It will be cooler driving in Texas now. Ive read the handbook several times and my understanding is that, if you are trying to stay cool in summer then both heater knobs must be pulled right out.

"Pull out the knob on the right hand side of the heater control panel to regulate the the supply of air from the heater. When fully out the air supply is completely shut off"

HI Derek,all owners familiar with their cars thermal control system will use that configuration in the summer for the control knobs. No gurantee of the effectiveness implied---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
Keoke, the ball needs to jump up before I can turn the handle? We tried to turn it wit a screw in the hole, but it is completely stuck. But maybe that is because it needs to jump up first then... I'll try again, our knees are getting fried in the car with that thing turned on!

Yes Miranda, "it must jump up" because the valve is frozen in the valve body . Using the method I described You must get the little ball to jump up, this unfreezes the valve from the valve body and it will then turn freely.Let me know how you get on--Keoke
 
No, Scott, that's a drain tap. My understanding is, they are talking about the heater valve on the right side of the engine. With the help of this valve you can restrict the hot water floating from the engine to the heater...
 
The valve is completely stuck, but we did get the valve at the other end of the hose to close. Unfortunately it doesn't make a different at all, we are still burning up... I guess we have to learn to live with it.
