How concerned should I be about the heat from the engine and the paint on the bonnet(hood)? I noticed that the paint gets really warm after a drive, but the whole car gets warm in the sun? Is there any reason for concern? Is a heat shield or mat of some sort worth the money on the underside of the bonnet?
 
My tuppence worth: Paint is a "wear item" the same as brake pads or a clutch. With proper care it'll last a long time (made to withstand what it's subjected to) but will eventually need to be "replaced." A heat shield in the form of insulation can't hurt, but proper washing/waxing and minimising exposure to direct sun are more effective to lengthen the life of a finish.
 
You can glue some of that foil backed insulation above motor. That should take away some of the temp.
 
I have some small "specks" forming on the hood. The paint is about 3 years old and looks good all over the rest of the car. I was curious if this is due to heat, or contamination during the painting process. Maybe just a coincidence?
 
Three years in your climate? I'd say poor prep before I'd blame exposure to the environs and engine temps.
 
Have you considered running a header and having it ceramic coated or wrapped? There are under-hood temperature reductions going that route.
 
Actually I never really thought about the heat being an issue, until I was thinking about repainting and wanted to make sure I wasn't setting myself up for the same problem. At this point I would guess it was poor prep. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
