... and noticed the TV had gone silent. Looked outside and found the dish on the ground.

That stupid rusted-out pole cost me an extra $90 when we moved in, and now it's going to cost another $50 to have the dish reinstalled (despite paying monthly for "equipment protection"). And they can't get anyone out here for 2 days. This might be the final straw that makes me cancel DirecTV.
 
can't you just get someone to hold it? :D
 
When AT&T bought them the service strated going down hill then.
 
Just make another pole and strap the receiver onto the pole.

Face the receiver toward the north, and gradually rotate it until you get good reception.

There are a couple websites that can help you aim the receiver.
