to see a video of a crash that happened recently at LRP. It is shot from inside a 914 that hits Jon Einhorn's 3000 which is parked at the top of the hill (Jon was out of the car).

Apparently the Porsche gets light at the crest and that is that. No injuries as far as I know but damage must have been substantial.
 
Ouch! So, where's the yellow flag? Why is a disabled car allowed to remain that close to the track? Atleast no one (aparently) hurt.
 
Good questions though in most situations like this usually I see flaggers hold up a yellow for a few laps till drivers are aware of the hazard and then they take it down so that they can hold up another yellow for a new situation. AT LRP there is not room to pull off as you can see.

BTW the big oil trail running up the right side of the track apparently came from Healey.
 
Hi.. There is quite a debate going on right now in the NER and the Northeast.

The car was parked 12 laps previous to the accident with a broken axle.., so by this time yellow flags were not necessary..

F & C and the OS determined that the car was in a "relatively safe" area and left it there instead of instituting a full course yellow to retrieve the car. (full course yellows are a real pain in the butt if you are a racer, and should be avoided as much as possible )

Unfortunately this decision proved incorrect... possibly if the car was parked a little further behind the turn it would have been okay...but in essence, with the tight quarters of LRP, there really is no safe area.

A few years earlier, I broke and parked in the shadow of the bridge for the last half of the race.. if you note earlier in the video, the porsche went off there as well, so at that time, I was not safe as well, and would have had a busted race car!

Also a contributing factor was that between the recent rains, and the recent configuration of the track has provided many, many wet spots, I'm sure that hitting the wet ground and puddle did not allow the porsche to gain control earlier.

No matter how much foresight we put into making racing as safe as possible, the unforseen always seems to appear.. look at Massa.. that spring that hit him, if it were three inches to the left.. itw would have been nothing more than debris on the track!!!

During last year's LRP Vintage Festival a friend of mine spun/stalled at the very inside edge of the track at turn 2 and was instructed to stay in the car for the several laps remaining in the session.

He was faced in the right direction and he could easily have been pulled to a much safer place, even if only a few yards up to the infield side of 3 but the marshalls apparently chose not to do that. Though there was a yellow thrown at turn 1 flag station it was frightening to watch--luckily no one clobbered him.

I wonder if the decision-making process is different at LRP.
