healey gearbox

I have an emergency on time. I just received my newly restored 100S and have found that the gearbox will allow the selection of 2 gears at one time. I have gone through the drills of determining that everything else is OK in the rearend, driveline, amd engine. I need someone to help me with a gearbox check and replacement of detent balls or something like that(?).

My real problem is time. The car is to leave next Friday for the Monterey Historic Races. Does anybody know of someone good to contact to try and have the gearbox fixed this next week. Obviously someone good who knows what they are doing. My location is Irvine, Orange County , Southern California.

Any leads or help would be greatly aprrectiaed. Thanks!

Hi Greg, You might talk to David Knock or Eric at Absolutely British in Ontario CA.---Fwiw Keoke

Thanks Keoke. Someone mentioned to me Chris of "Chris Foreign Car Service" in Costa Mesa, CA. Any opinion on his service?

Greg

No Greg, I am not familiar with that shop. But stay out of Long Beach. Call the guy and talk to him won't hurt---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think John Loftus goes to Chris.
Then there's Britalia in Fullerton and Eric in Ontario - I've gone to both, would recommend them.

Come to think of it, a couple of years ago, my transmission would get stuck in reverse and not release unless I shut the engine off - very weird. Something about shift shaft lockout balls - Eric fixed it - repairs only, not a rebuild.

Thanks Sharon, I have left messages for both Eric and Rich. As it is the weekend I am afraid I am stuck until Monday. The trans is not out so hopefully getting the repair will be easy.

With an 100S I would talk to someone who has owned and restored one and get his thoughts!!! Try Michael Salter from Precision Sportscar who owns and raced AHS3903

I will try to post some pictures in the future. Right now I am in major hurry-up mode trying to get the car to the Monterey Historics.

The car was restored in Ontario and Mike Salter has been consulted many times on the details car and has been very helpful in providing parts and advice.

Now that the car is in So Cal it is up to me to get it done this week. I have the gearbox out of the car and am in the process of arranging parts, etc. The process is do-able it is just the time!

Greg,
I have used Chris' shop for a few small things over the years. He's a very nice guy, years of experience on LBC's and may be able to help you out. His shop is just behind Hub Auto Supply on Harbor in case you decide to drop by. Email me if you need an extra set of hands on your gearbox install or anything else since I am just down the road.

Cheers,

Thanks John,

I tried Eric but he is in the middle of a move to Santa Maria and is not taking any work at this time. Chris is so busy he could not help for 2 weeks. I got the gearbox out OK and had someone tear it down and discovered that there were no detent balls in the box, that's a problem!

I ordered new parts from England and hope to have them in a day or so to put the box back together. Hopefully all will be together by the weekend. Then it will be time to raod test it and find out the other problems.

boy, talk about learning on the fly. Best of luck Greg. I never heard of detent balls, unless we're talking about negotiations with Gorbachev and you left the final "e" off detent.

sorry about the spelling errors. I am flying through everything I do these days, I am lucky to get any of it right.

Also known as a expert in 100S restorations, is Tom Kovacs, of Fourintune, in Cedarburg, WI. Tel : (262) 375-0876

Hi Greg, Did you have the springs that hold the detent ball in place?, or did you order them too.---Keoke

Hi Keoke,

I did have the three springs for the balls that are held in place by the side cover. Hardy engineering in England was to send everything I would need for a rebuild less the gears themselves. As that package is to arrive today I do not know specfically what is coming. I hope it is everything required. They seemed very knowledgable and were extremely helpful.

There is a rubber pad (buffer) located in the bell housing that I have heard will allow the detent balls to fall out if the pad is missing or flattened from use. See item # 11 Moss tranny diagram I have no idea if this applies to a 100S, anyone know?

That is a strange post above. I did not make that post, must be some slip in the computer/message board logistics?????

GregJ

Well Greg slip or not The answer is yes.---Keoke
