Healey BJ8 misfire

Any ideas out there - all appreciated: Healey 3000 misfires badly at startup and when warm will run for 15 minutes ok then misfire or sometimes stalls when driving or at idle.
Upgrades to try and correct:- New electronic ignition fitted to old distributor, new/coil/leads/plugs, head completely overhauled, compression good 160 to 170 psi, new fuel tank/pump (Pump clicks away then stops when pressure is up) and filter, carbies have done approx 2000 miles since overhaul, new radiator.
the 'experts' have tuned it and I have tuned it - no difference.
Twin SU HD8 carbs.

Have you tried adjusting the advance/retard.? It has probably nothing to do with carbs so you may have wasted $1,100. Remember - 90% of carburettor 'problems' are electrical.
 
Hi Roger,

I just thought I would come out of left field and suggest something that can cause similar symptoms but IMO has a low probability of being the cause. Check the white with black stripe ignition grounding wire coming from the cut-off switch in the boot. A loose bouncing wire in the boot, when driving, could randomly short the ignition and cause backfires and/or kill the engine.

I agree, Ray. A friend troubleshot this problem on another friend's 100M. The car would start, then run gradually worse before quitting. Suggest you disconnect that wire from the distributor.
