Healey BJ8 anti roll bar bushes

Hi All,

As I take gentle new steps into the world of classic motoring, I have established I need to replace the rubber bushes on my anti roll bar.

I ordered the bushes from ah spares and wondered if there is anything I need to consider before replacing. Is it as simple as jacking up the car, unscrewing and replacing?

One question in particular is how much do I tighten after replace? (Don't own a torque wrench yet!)...

Any advice/tips appreciated.

That is about right as far as I am concerned - no torque, just a good hand tight.

Hi James,

We need a little clarification. There are two sets of bushes on an anti-roll/sway bar: The ones that hold the bar to the chassis rails with brackets, and the ones that connect the bar to the lower part of the front suspension (these are often called 'links'). The ones that connect to the chassis are, I think, 5/16" threads so snug them up with lockwashers fully compressed (use new lockwashers). For the links, my father, an experienced mechanic, said to tighten until the bush 'mashes' out to about the diameter of the large flatwashers on either side. For operations such as this I usually use a 3/8" ratcheting socket wrench; and being of average strength I'm not likely to grossly over-tighten anything and snap it.
