healey antena

im looking to replace the radio antenna on my bj-7 the one the car came with was original factory option worked fine but could not be retracted into the fender all the way and left about 6" sticking up above the fender not good when you wash the car/try putting the car cover on etc, i tried fitting several others but the angle of these when extended was not correct, seems one with a smaller "well" is needed, anyone make one for right fender installation? thanks. :savewave:

Hi Anthony,
Someone turned me on to what hot rodders use. It's a hideaway antenna that I mounted under the shroud behind the drain channel. I haven't had the chance to test out the reception. The direction say it should be a certain distance from metal, I think 3/4"? Anyway, just another option.

greg w, thanks that's a good idea problem is id have to weld up the hole on the top of the fender bondo and paint i really dont want to do that since i like the period look of the original position, at one time i installed a short flexible rubber type that worked great i just didnt like the way it looked, all the new metal ones Ive tried had "wells" the part that goes below the fender that are too long and hit the brace on the interior of the fender, someone must make a shorter one even if it doesnt extend as far as the original. :savewave:

Hi Anthony,
Maybe give Crutchfield a call. They've several different styles, unfortunately they don’t list our car in their fitment database, so you’ll need to talk to an actual human. I saw one that is one piece that unscrews, Here’s a link to a retractable one. Doesn’t list the required depth for it though, thus the need to get on the phone, or maybe email.

Anthony,
I am using the one Greg provided a link to. I bought it from VB or Moss and the tip will push down below flush so you have to use the little key thing to get it started back up. It was less than $ 10.00 and works great.

edk, thanks, i just looked at the one gregw. posted that's the one i used to replace the old one, i liked the fact you need a "key" to extract it once its pushed all the way down, i discovered my problem is that whom ever drilled the original hole in the top of the fender placed it such a location that when i put the new one in there's interference with a brace inside the fender affecting its vertical placement, thus when i fully extend the antena its tip leans outboard making the car look as if its had one to many. Ive got the Eng. and trans. out, removed everything from the Eng. compartment and i begane "paint" stripping the entire thing, before i paint it ill try to get up inside the inner fender well and see what i can do, perhaps a "sawzall"? :hammer:
