Healey 5-Speed Conversion

A side question. Like Jerry above, I have a Moto Lita Steering wheel with a light wood finish and an after-market (Moss) gear shift knob in a dark Cherry finish. While I like both, I think they don't look quite right together. Anyone have a source for a gear knob that is more in the color range of the wheel?

I have emailed Pete at Healey 5 speed several days ago with no reply. Can someone give me an approximate price for the conversion with and without the transmission. Thanks and have a good day!

John

As mentioned before, Pete does not do email very often. Better to call him .

The conversion without transmission was $900 two years ago. I don't now the price with transmission.

Speedo didn't work. I just had the speedo rebuilt so I know it was good. The cable coming out of the trans isn't rotating.

If you used the driven gear that was supplied with the conversion kit, then it's possible the drive gear on your transmission is not the correct mate for it. I had the same problem, but have dealt with this a few times in the past on other cars, so I knew to look for it. Most car makers have different drive/driven gear combinations (even within the same car model family)... and different gearing requires different numbers of teeth, which often requires diameter changes to the drive/driven gears to get the speedo to work correctly. As such, it's possible to mismatch them.

When I first put in the driven gear that Pete supplied, I looked down through where the shifter goes, and saw that the gears weren't touching each other. The drive gear was too small in diameter to mate with the supplied driven gear... so the speedo cable would not move.

After quite a bit of research, I figured out what drive gear was supposed to be in the transmission - it's Toyota part number 33481-22020. That will mate correctly with the driven gear supplied with the kit (at least for late BJ8 w/factory rear diff... don't know about others). It's actually pretty easy to change out the drive gear, but it does require pulling the back housing off the transmission.

Thanks for the info Robert! I'll know what to look for when I work on the trans. For now, I need to continue putting the car back-together so the trans is a long ways off right now.

E-mail from Pete Delaney, received April 27, 2010, outlining what is in his/Smitty's 5 speed kit for installing a Toyota transmission and the cost of the kit.
I'll start a fresh thread to make it easier for folks to find when doing a search. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada so presumably the shipping that is included in the $ 1975 is to my location. His contact info is at the end.

Hi Guys,
I have been trying to reach Peter Delaney to inquire about the transmission conversion. My 4 speed side shift is locking between gears and I am tired of fooling around with it so I thought I may go ahead and update it for driving purposes and shelf the orginal for the next care taker of the car. My wife ask me if I would put an automatic in it . I just laughed at her, if I wanted a Miata I would just buy one. Any one know the best option on this swap?
Thanks Bob
