the headliner in my prefect under the rear window is a piece of cardboard that follows the curvature of the car and I am having a hard time wrapping my head around this install. I have been told it goes on after the headliner is installed, so that tells me it is upholstered separately and installed last but what holds it in place, I see a tack strip down low but I think it is for the liner and this curved cardboard is held in by the window molding is this correct.

Interesting photos you found Jim. The piece in question was also in my '48. It definitely was covered in headliner fabric though and was never attached to anything as far as I could determine. The back window molding was missing in my car when I got it so I can't say for sure whether that held it or not.
 
The photos helped me out quite a bit and what surprised me was the closing bid cheap but then one must look at the cost of parts for the car. Once I get the headliner in and the roof sealed I am going to sell the Prefect and take a pretty good hit as I have a bit over $5000 into this bean fart. Well back to work have a great day

I located my piece and found some interesting screw holes in it. At each end there is one hole that does line up with the headliner tack strip. Then there are two vertical holes right at the end of the window on both sides. The appear to line up with the vertical stiffeners below the window but there are no matching holes in the metal. As I said, it was never attached to anything since I had the car. Also, we need some new photos of your Prefect.
 
Found a pretty good photo of a '50 that should help.

It is a nice-looking car I only hope mine will turn out as nice, I am surprised that it went for less money than I thought it should bring. I saved all the photos which will help me in my restoration. I thank you
