Headlights

Official OF also! I love to look at the lucas logo on the one set of sealed beams I still have installed but run halogen's in everything else. The thing that decided that for me was whacking a deer with my MGB a few years ago. Yes, I was overdriving my sealed beams! Think I would have at least scrubbed off more speed if I would have had decent headlights.

Jack, times are changing. You probably can not even get incandescents for your daily driver. I fully understand that YOU do not need better lights in YOUR bugeye. But to imply that no bugeye nor bugeye driver needs them seems a bit ... err... narrow minded. (Maybe you weren't implying, but that is what I inferred)

I fully agree that a show car that is used for only occasional pleasure drives would be fine with incandescents. However, I do a bunch of night driving and inclement weather does not deter me.

Congratulations on you 100K miles and 30 years driving BE's. I hope your luck holds out.
 
The H4s in the Sprite and the MGB work great,
(Lucas in the Bugeye and some Moss clear lens
things in the B) so much so that I'm removing the
Lucas driving/fog lights off the BE. Rarely drive at night
(deer phobia) in either car.
Those Moss clear lens deals look neat on the B and
aren't ridiculously expense. Huge upgrade from the
sealed beams in the B.
No new relay...yada yada...just plug in and go on the B.
Works for me.

Boy did you read a lot in that. The old standard lights work great, they are very difficult to out drive at our speeds. They are cheep.

Hay if you want to light up the world it is your choice.

Why not regular lights and driveing lights?

What ever turns you on.
 
Sorry Jack, I just thought you must be wanting to "debate" since you mentioned twice in one thread that regular bulbs are fine. :wink:

We must acknowledge that these cars are used by different people in different ways. I'm not trying to convince anyone that THEY need better lighting. I was just asking for opinions on upgraded lighting. I did not ask about OEM style lighting. I've experienced that.

Depending on the conditions they may be easily out driven, which is why people used to (and still do) install auxiliary driving lights. Personally, I do not care for the look of auxiliary driving lights, and it is another item to maintain.

I do not make a habit of driving faster than conditions warrant, but I do not want my headlights to become the limiting factor because then I become a hazard to others on the road.

Add to that back-woods gravel roads and critters of all shapes and sizes, I don't skimp on lighting either...

I do understand this sentiment; but since I don't notice them from my seat, I just don't think about how silly I look...

As I was completing my restoration, I couldn't make a decision
on headlamps, as I wanted decent lighting and was concerned about
the "standard" stuff. I decided to just put in sealed beam units
(Wagner), and deal with the issue later. Initially, the night vision
was not good, so I carefully aimed them. HUGE difference. Not
quite a good as my wife's Mercedes...but close. Now I'm not sure
I will change them out.

Aiming does make a huge difference. There are some good online tutorials on the subject.
 
I've fitted several sets of Sylvania halogen sealed beams and liked them. Last time I wanted a set my local parts dealer says he can't get them anymore. So he sells me a set of Wagners and I hate them. They would be fine on a 6 foot tall pickup but on a midget when the brights are set right the dims light about 50 foot in front of the car. The old Sylvania's were much better in my opinion.
Frank swears by Hella's. I've always wondered if they were worth the extra money.
Anyone else with experience and opinion's??
