Headlights wont turn off! Hellpp

I will pull it out today and check. Thanks

2 hrs later
Okay, I pulled the Cowl off today and I checked the wire harness's. No melted wires as far as I could see in the harness. But I did find the high beam wire burned at the signal. Still not sure if that is why the lights wont turn off? But that accounts for the smoke coming out of the steering column during the short.
Could that affect the light switch to any extent?
And no, I didnt pull the wire harness covers back any farther than what I could get to. By the way, the wire is the Blue/White coming in.
While I have the cowl off, what can I do to fix the signal cancel on one side. It seems to work if I push the lever down just a tad. It doesnt cancel on one side only.

My first "empirical" suggestion is to disconnect the leadlamp sockets from the bulbs and check EACH blue wire at the dimmer switch with an ohm meter for a short to ground. Your car has a white connector at the lower part of the column making it (relatively) easy to check the forward harness (to the bulbs) and switch itself. The blue wire supplies power from the headlamp switch (V+), the blue/red is low beam, blue/white is highs.

As for the cancel issue, there's a "nubbin" on the column which when going straight ahead should be right between the pawls which acutate the cancel device in the switch. If it's in the proper orientation and one direction doesn't cancel, you MAY be able to find/fix the switch problem but the things were riveted and glued together, making disassembly rather like watchmaking instead of automotive repair.

Well, I was playing around with the signal, trying to get the melted plastic away so it would make good connection, and now the lights will finally turn off (altough they only turn on high beam, not low), but they also go off when I using the turn signal switch to one side. The other side is fine. And no, I havent checked the above wires with a ohm meter. I can live with the high beams, because I rarely drive it at night. But I cant live with the lights going off when I use the left turn signal...

Well, I did check out all the wires that I could with my meter, and I dont see a problem on my end. Of course I know that kind of stuff about as good as an Alaskan Mayor knowns about running the Country.
So with that said, Does anybody have a signal and harness they can part with $$$. I am hoping that will be the fix all in this case.

Thanks

P.S. Thats my next and hopefully last resource to get this remedied?

Good news...
I finally found out that it was the headlight dimmer switch that was bad. I had it checked out by a repetable auto shop today.
So with that out of the way, does anybody have an old/used dimmer switch they would like to sell me. Not sure of the part number because there seems to be three choices in Moss's. One of them is part no. 141--820. The others are 141-830, 141-840.
Again, I have a 73 roadster.

Thanks, and thanks for all the suggestions through out the posts.

What do the numbers mean that VB references their dimmer switches
"A" fitted to GNH-5-267109 and GHD-5-267332
"C" fitted from GHN-5-267110 and GHD-5-267333.

Moss has RD to (c)267109
RD from (c)267110 to 328100
RD from (c)328101

Thanks, I could use the help if I dont find a used one.
