Hi all:
It's been a while since I've been on this site, mainly because my BJ7 has been away for a %^&* year getting painted. However, the car is back now and we're getting to the end of the restoration road. My goal is a 100 point car.
I have four questions:
- Is there a headlight I could use that will give me better illumination than the original, but still pass muster with the judges? Halogen perhaps?
- I have the original sterring whell, but would like to upgrade it with a period wood rim. Any suggestions as to what would be an appropriate period replacement that would be acceptable to the judges?
- The Moment/Anderson AH Restoration Guide says that BJ7s through 24366 (my car is 23153)had 48 spoke wire wheels, and then switched to 60 spoke. I would prefer the 60 spoke, but not if it will cost me points. Will the judges notice?
- Were chrome wire wheels a dealer added item?

I'm not certain about your proposals, but chances are you would get deductions if you deviate from the published concours guidlines.

Your car will only be judged once if you actually acheive a 100 point restoration. After that you can make whatever changes you want, the car will technically still be a gold level car.

If you really want a 100 point car, I suggest you follow the guidlines to the letter and add improvements like those hologen headlamps, wood steering wheels and 60 spoke chrome wires later. Understand that the concours judges will find plenty to nitpick on your car, no need to give them obvious features to feast on.

Headlights, steering wheel, wheels and tires can all be changed before a judging event OR changed after a judging event. Like Bill said, prep your car to be judged, and add the other stuff after.
 
Thanks guys. On reflection, you're absolutely right. I can do those few things any time. I guess I'm just getting excited because it's almost done
