Headlight relay question

I eyeballed my headlight harness last night. Wondering if the kits disassemble enough to route through the panels, if not and you have to cut it apart, well you have to rebuild it anyway, may as well start from scratch at that point. My harness looks terrible but the wires are probably still okay. I'm planning on pulling it all out and rebuilding it, hoping there's enough correct colored wire between it and the old main harness to rebuild in correct color codes. Sure hope my headlights look better (brighter) when I'm done. If nothing else it will be A LOT safer.

I bought and used the VB harness. Only issue is with the headlight bowls that have wire routed through them and were not coming off my car. The recpticles on the harness were cut off and the wires on the outside of the bowls were cut and spliced into the harness. The harness is covered with bright yellow plastic. and it is very visible in the nose of the car behind the grill. I did mine late last fall, and when car comes out of storage in a few weeks I will wrap the yellow with black tape.

The harness was perfect for me ,I did not have to think about electrikery more than I needed to. I hate dealing with it.

Woodie,

Try the Jeg's catalog, they have some excellent Wire Loom cloth material in black. Comes in a couple of different diameters to fit all sorts of wire bundle sizes. I saw these on Trevor's BE and I added the same to my Spridget. And of course when I want to come up with a picture I can't find one that is handy. Trevor can you some a pic for Woodie?

Why not pull the buckets? Something tricky here? I was planning on it to rewire it all "properly". Someone before had cut the wires as they exited the bucket and blade terminal'ed them to the harness. They had fallen off when I got the car. I fixed it but don't like it. Was going to re-do it "properly", or at least "better". So, you would need to cut off the ends of the VB harness to get the wires through all the grommets anyway? Or do they disconnect somewhere to allow that? Just curious, I've pretty much decided to just do it all myself anyway.

So if I want my original Lucas toggle switch to live when I put in a set of Halogen head lights I need to go to relays? Forgotten OHM's law to figure what the load increase will be. Are'nt most halogen's around 60 watt?

On my Morris I used a single relay for both high and low beam. It can be done if you stare at the diagram for awhile and think it over.

Glen

I used two partly because I set up dual circuits - including feed wires so that if one fails I should still be able to get home. also, when I stared at the diagram, my brain started to hurt

The difference in headlight lumens output between stock setup vs. relays is significant. No more peering through the windshield wondering where I'm going on those "dark and stormy nights."

I ordered some relays, will forgo the kit as I'm sure I'd end up having to tear it apart to route it were I need it and recover it and at that point, why bother? I should be able to scavenge enough good proper colored wire to rebuild my own. It needs it. Current wiring is very scary.

If not British Wiring I thinks its britishwiring.com can provide all of the properly color coded wire by the meter. They are here in the States and provided excellent service for me. Tell them how many meters and it will be in the mail and on your doorstep in a matter of days.
