Headlight Bowls

Hello

I am trying to remove the wiring from the headlight bowls on my TR4 so I can get them blasted and painted. There is a rubber grommet thing that is holding the wiring in place and I can't think how to remove the wiring without cutting the grommet. Can someone let me know if there is a way to get the wiring out and still be able to re-use the grommet?

Thanks for your help.

Cut it out. Buy new units from one of the big three for about $10. Your car is pushing 48 years old, time to replace all of that type of stuff anyway.

Do you have the wires un plugged from the bullett connectors outside the headlight buckets, behind the grille?
The grommet, if it's still flexible, comes out twards the inside of the headlight bucket (in the bowl) and if the wires are disconnected, the bullets will pull through the grommet first as they are not much bigger around than the wire.
Mark the wires with some masking tape (both sides of the connector) to make re-assembly easy.

The wires tend to "bond to the grommet, carefully ease a small screwdriver through the grommet alongside the wires, and lubricate with washing up liquid and repeat all round the grommet ,libicate the wires with liquid and they should pull through into the bowl ,try one at a time, then remove the grommet.Just done that on an XK150.

Thanks, I have removed the grommet on one of the bowls. Annoyingly I nicked it while removing it from the bowl. Removed it as per the instructions - pulled the wires through and then levered out the grommet. First one was tough but the other two came out a lot easier. Thanks for your help and I'll try not to nick the other grommet!
