Many times on the site,it has been suggested,including by me, to have headers checked for straightness. I will soon be installing a Hi Torque starter and will be removing the headers to pull out the old and install the new. I feel it is a great opportunity to have this done. Whom do I take them to?
I figure I better practice what I preach.
 
Some say that high quality muffler shops have this ability, that is, to surface and true the mating surface of headers. I took mine to a "friend" who owns a machine shop and got $crewed. This process should cost less than, even way less than, 100 bucks. Don't ask how much I paid.
 
Check it yourself with some paint or die and a windowpane. Then you can decide what you need to do, if anything.

With a little care, it's remarkable how flat you can make things with a mere belt sander.
 
Chalk and a steel straight edge will tell you quite a bit as well.

I did check mine when I bought them from JetHot and they were perfectly flat on the sealing surfaces. That can be misleading, because there can still be an issue with the angle of travel down to the collector because the clearance between the frame side and the engine is not that much on a TR6.
 
Header Flattening???....Whew..for a minute there I thought I had logged on to the WWF.

OK,..OK..pop em in a vise and use a body air board file.Put a guide coat of some color paint on first, then .....file.

One last comment...are you sure you want a Hi-torque starter?
 
I'd like to know as well. Unless you have a very high compression engine, why would you need it? I had mine rebuilt locally and it works just fine. But I'm nearly stock, so maybe that is the difference.
 
I was lucky. Did not check JetHot Pacesetters and just bolted them on. All is well.

Not wanting to hijack this thread I will just say I am very glad that I listened to TR6Bill and went with the high-torque starter. Nothing to do with it being hi-torque.

Any dentists here? I wet sanded my daughters front teeth level,a better job than the dentist did.He used a rotory grinder, I used a hand board file. She was unhappy with his job and I said I could do it.
 
I don't like the way the headers hug the original starter. way to close for me. I don't need to rebuild it . Did that about 3 or 4 years ago and it hasn't started the car yet. Even powder coated the case.

I have several inches between mine and the starter comes out easily with the headers in place. Not a great picture, but all I have from that angle.

Gordo, Tom's carbs are MicroPolished by Jeff Palya, if I'm not mistaken. I have the same process on mine, but three.

Well I am going to sign off and get up early to start cleaning my car for the show on Sunday.

First I am going to watch Poriot on the Biography channel in the morning. Always some old British cars in it.
 
I cleaned mine yesterday. Tomorrow I take pics of the new A/F sensor in action and get ready for a new web page.

You are scaring me with that teeth comment.

I paid about $160 from Ted Schumacher at TSI-Automotive.

He has the best price and knows more about these than anybody.
 
Bill- It's been a while hasn't it? He sells them on ebay once in a while for 190
this is fresh off his site
Prices: All starters are $200 except the V8 starters (114 & 114B). V8 starters are $225.
