Is it true that on all Jaguar motors the headstuds go through the head's water jacket?

Sorry for the dumb questions... I'm a Jag novice.

no I don't think so. Later XK blocks have the studs passing through the water jacket to the base of the block, maybe that's what you are thinking of?

All XJ's up through the series 3 cars have the head studs Eaten, I mean immersed in the cooling water. When you remove them they look like beavers been chewing on em.---Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

So then 50's and 60's jag motors don't have this problem, correct?

Seems the smart thing to do would be to make SS studs for this application...

no I don't think they have. I'm not sure if it was with the advent of the 4.2 litre engine, where the bore spacing were altered slightly, they may have had a sealing issue with the block distorting.
I'm not sure about stainless fasteners personally, they have their own problems, especially where heat is involved. Stainless can be brittle and threads pick up quite easily.

The 3.4 and 3.8L engines had short studs engaging the block at the top surface. 13 of 'em, IIRC. The 4.2 had the long, wet studs.
 
The 4.2 'XJ' Block has ten long studs . The two front and back are still short studs. The 'lightweight' block can be easily identified by the additional engine mounting holes toward the center of the block. The freeze plugs were moved to the base of the stud hole so you can see what you are doing as you are drilling out the broken stud.

The V12 has studs that are exposed to the coolant.
