Harbour Freight, O'Reilly's and Autozone didn't have em'.
Think they have them at Sears? What dia is the short stud, the nut is 9/16 that I'm too familiar with.

I *think* yours are 5/16"... but not certain. Best wait for a REAL Spridget owner to confirm.

Don't try this at home.

Torqued it tight to 75 lbs - click.
Loosened it at 75 lbs.

I closed the garage door and blinds so the neighbours couldn't see, turned up (Sir) Tom Jones (really loud) to drown out the screams.

It surrendered peacefully.
I'm not sure if waving a 75 lb wrench at it, or if it was the really loud Tom Jones that did it, but its capitulation was honourable.
3 hours.

Well bowled, Sir!!! Now clean the threads in the block, chamfer the edges on them, get NEW studs and use red LocTite with an INCH pound torque-down in the block.

WOOHOO!!!
 
DOC! NO red LocTite!!! Oil for lube, and no more than 50 inch lbs. Red loctite will make them truly a permanent installation. That stuff requires 400 degree heat to break loose. Overtorquing or LocTite serves no purpose whatsoever, other than to create future problems.

I'd not over-torque 'em (note "INCH pound"), but I do use the LT red... and replace studs when time comes to re-do head. And yes, it takes heat to get 'em to release. I've never had a problem... I know the tension on the studs' block threads is what holds 'em, not their "tightness" in the block. Cleanliness should be the big consideration. "Whether to LocTite or not" depends on your willingness to "fuss" with unsticking them at a later time. I usually "oil film" my headgasket, too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

"Q-Tips" and mineral spirits. Blow 'em out with compressed air, then "Q-Tips" and carb cleaner... more air. Some will say run a tap down 'em as well. Only reason I'd do that was if I thought they were damaged or if the block had been left to rust.

Just so they're clean/dry.
 
Not a head question, but an intake manifold question, didn't figure it needed a post on its own.
Atop said manifold are two thin tubes, both <u>had</u> little rubber stoppers on. Now I have one rubber stopper. The catalogs don't have them so I question their necessity.
If they are encessary, does anyone have one please?
I'll pay for it, and shipping, all 39c of it.

That's the reason I run the head studs all the way down in the block & then back them out a turn or so.
 
Hello Baz,

too late now but it sounds as if all you needed was an 'Italian tune up' which is to drive the car hard getting it nice and hot internally this blows out the soft carbon. Yes, you do want to look at your mixture when it is back together.

Jeff you saved this thread with your torque fiquires and advice on oiling the studs. Listen to Jeff he's giving you good, solid advice. Taking advice from a 948 racer on how to do this is always solid as he has had to do more than the rest all combinded /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
