head gasket

Dumb question
Blew the head gasket on my Spridget at Roebling road, fun till it went. My question is I had the head checked planed etc. My new gasket is copper on one side and I assume steel on the other. There is no indication of top or bottom. There is a ring around the cylinder holes do these rings go up or down?
I also read no gasket sealer needed but a thin coat of high temp paint will aid in sealing.
Thanks for your help

If it's a Payen they *usually* have "TOP" stamped in 'em. If not, the copper side is usually the "up" side. Matching the various oil passages and water jacket holes should work to show ya which way is correct.

How much compression ratio are you running, LP HP car or full prep FP car, or vintage?, 13.0 to 1 or lower a copper Payen gasket or the black composite either one work fine. Copper end goes up, use copper gasket spray, silver paint or Permatex Hitack to seal the copper gasket. On the real high compression stuff we use the Cometic gasket these days. You running ARP head stud, right, what torque value are you using, and make sure the deck surfaces check straight.
