Yes, it should at least be marked front to rear. Be completely sure that all passageways are not blocked. it can be easy to miss one and then you wont be happy.
Welcome to the forum... I agree with SilentUnicorn, there should be a pressed 'front' into the gasket. This 'front' goes up and, well, in front... If you got the gasket from moss the word 'front' may be in Chinese or Hindi.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

"The amount of energy in a system available NOT to do work" is one definition... my doctorate is purely honourary: Bestowed upon me by my Patriarch after delving into early particle theory... Penzias and Wilson were an inspiration /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
He declared in the garage one evening that I'd qualify for a PhD in the study of entropy... There was a set of cantankerous Weber 40 DCOE's involved... and too many of my friends within earshot. It "took" shall we say.
...besides; "Dr Train-wreck" just doesn't have the same ring to it, IYSWIM. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
In your vernacular we could postulate that I'm the one who will "buy high, sell low" every bloody time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
Back to head gasket: & do not use any type of sealant (i.e., Permetex or the like)...I really don't know why God let man discover that stuff - there's no place on a British car where its useful!
I looked and there was no markings at all , but all the holes match , also dug around in the trash found the old head gasket. it was marked , had it right after all .
thanks for all the help
I've just taken 4 heads off engines to take to machine shop...all 4 had the thermostat housings glued on with Permatex in addition to the studs & bolts - had to break one thermo housing into tiny pieces to get it off!

Apples and oranges.
The Permatex Hylomar spray on blue stuff #81998 (not the tube o'glop from Autozone) is truly awesome. It was designed specifically for Rolls Royce jet aircraft engines. It's that good. I would not install a head gasket or turbo flange without it.
