Head Gasket for a 948?

Hey all,

After my fun at Blackhawk this weekend, I need to replace the head gasket on the 948 before Mid-Ohio next week.

What should I use and where to get it? I heard to use the Fel-Pro but I also heard they do not make them for the 948 engine.

Thoughts?

F. P. has a head set only and not the h.g. separately.
HS21042C-2

This set is the same pieces as in the FP 1098cc set as the bore is about .070" bigger.

Payen (same hg ) sells the h.g. separately and usually thru Moss, VB etc and whoever else that is direct with Payen UK.

Try APT or Winners Circle.

If you are using any meaningful CR (over 11:1) you will have to do somew slight addition of wires between the bores for longevity . Decent head studsR mandatory.

While we're talking about head gaskets I have two questions:

1. Are the Payen black composite gaskets reuseable after the head has been removed?

2. When retorquing the head with one of these gaskets is it best to back off the nut and then torque or not?

This is on an MGA engine w/APT studs and nuts and about 12.5:1 CR.

1. Not reusable.
some folks do reuse MLS and copper sheet gaskets but I think life's too short for reusing...except maybe for valve cover gaskets.

2. Yes. Because the brakaway torque of the bolt or nut is high you wont get a good torque reading. Best to drain the water well below the block deck when you retorque, even tho you do only one nut at a time.

I even go to the trouble of removing the nuts and re moly lubing the stud treads and washer and nut flanges b4 retorquing. Especially if running in the wet or if it's been a few races between retorks.
