HD8 Throttle Shaft

I have done a basic rebuild of my HD8 carbs on my BJ8. I loosened both of the throttle shaft connections when I removed the carbs. Now I am ready to tighten each carb onto the throttle shaft and fire it up. I noticed there is a bit of play before the throttle shaft actually engages to the carb shaft (maybe 5 to 10 degree rotation before they engage).

Do I leave that" slop" when I retighten?

It would seem to create a slight delay before the throttle engages the carb shafts unless I take out the slop during initial setup. I realize I may need to adjust each separately when I set the mixture/idle synch when it is idling. My intuition is to take out the slop at set up. Been wrong before though.

Assuming the carbs are balanced and THEIR INTERCONNECTING linkage is tightened__I recognize that maybe you haven't completed this step yet__then there SHOULD BE a slight gap between the pedal linkage and where it touches the point of contact with the carbs...

Sorry if that sounds vague, but it's probably been 40-50 yrs since I've read through the SU manuals I have (some instructions you only need to read once and you carry out for the rest of your life) but you DO want a little dead space before the pedal affects butterfly movement.

So, with the linkage between the carbs loose, the carbs are balanced and idle speed set. Tighten their interconnecting linkage. insure there's slight gap to the main linkage, and tighten that joint.

NOTE: THE FIRST STEP TO TUNING THE CARBS IS TO MAKE SURE THE VALVES AND TIMING IS SET.

I had done the timing recently when I replaced my distributor. Valves adjusted last fall along with new plugs. I currently have the fast idle screws so they do not affect the throttle shaft. I expect to adjust the screws to increase the idle and synch them. I personally think the car idles best at around 1000 rpm. I did not change the mixture set screws during the removal. I will check the mixture again with a Colortune once I get them balanced and at proper idle. I figured I can get the car started with mixture reasonably close when I fire it up. Thanks for the advise.
