Have Problem

I have a 1990 xj6 that continues to run a little hot, is this the thermostat unit or is it the water pump? I would hate to buy a new water pump if it is only the thermostat sensor. ANybody has a similar problem like this? Got any advice?

XJ6Lenny:
Have you checked the radiator? Jag is 13 years old. Have you done a cooling system flush and thermostat change lately?
Check under the waterpump for the weephole, is it leaking antifreeze? Has the transmission been acting up, cooled by radiator, also!
Most heating can be simple as maintenance. Jags have aluminum heads, require change of antifreeze every two years.

I don't think the cause is the thermostat, if it was so, the temperature of your car should go up and down.

How old are the liquids? Freshing (??) Oil and water? Maybe there are some fragments of dirt inside of them. This can cause it to lose his freshing properties.

Larry's got the right idea-check for leaks and fluid levels. If everything checks out, getting a proper coolant flush and having it all replaced will be beneficial (plus, the car's a '90 so a Jag dealership will most likely do the work, in case you don't think your independent shop could do it correctly). How do you drive the car? If you only run it at highway speeds, it may not overheat as much, due to the higher airflow around the radiator-if the temp's skyrocketing in traffic, you've got more serious problems (low coolant, bad pump, etc.).
Hope this doesn't confuse the issue!
