I figure most of your threads are the result of a goofy proclivity for CAB, Doc....hehehehe

Geez. Here I try an' inject an appreciation for HISTORY, an' you go an' shoot it down 'cause it's mired in apparent Obscurity o' CAB.

Well how 'bout that guy Lincoln gave control of th' Union army to... Wazziz name? Meade? Now HE was a piece o' work.

Meade was a real piece of work - but he never worked!

Woulda made a short conflict if'n 'e HAD.

Can't figger him as an Academy guy... Glad they "fixed" that!

Meade was a West Pointer....he beat Lee at Gettysburg but didn't pursue & finish him off as Lee was retreating; Lincoln wasn't happy.....for the remainder of the 1863 Fall campaigning season, during both the Bristoe Campaign and the Mine Run Campaign, Meade was outmaneuvered by Lee and withdrew after fighting minor, inconclusive battles, because of his reluctance to attack entrenched positions.....Meade's decisions while in command of the Army of the Potomac have been the focus of controversy. He has been accused of not being aggressive enough in pursuit of Confederate forces, and being reluctant to attack on occasion.

Not to mention his performance after Grant became Commander of all Union Armies.

That's just what I'm talkin' about. Consensus is that the war would have been shortened considerably had George been more aggressive at the outset. Academy training even back then was amazing, Lee and George both had that benefit. May have been a good administrator but he was a less-than stellar commander.

In times like these, aggressive pursuit of the other guys is a good thing in my book.

Wasn't it Hackworth who said: "You have to out-G the G!" ?
