So I work all weekend on my rear brake calipers so I can get my IRS finally finished. Only one small problem: I had been working on my FRONT calipers all this time and didn't realize it! Oh well, the fronts needed doing also, but sheesh, I should have figured this out a long time ago!

Color me red with embarrassment!

As long as it doesn't have drums in the back and disk in front (like my car), I think you can forgive yourself...

My favorite "mix-up" story involved a friend's VW. He took the transaxle completely apart to rebuild it. When rebuilding a VW trans, one has to be sure to put the ring gear back on it's original posistion....it will easily fit on either side of the pinion gear in the trans case. My friend wasn't so careful. After putting the car completely together, he hopped in and found it had.......one "forward" and four "reverse" gears!

Nial, all he did was turn it into a Formula Vee transaxle! Could have sold it "as is" to a Vee driver, bought another transaxle, and still have had some cash left over!
When I was racing Super Vees, I put the engine together one night, and left the oil slinger in the parts washer. It wasn't pretty when I started it the next day!
I can sympathize with Basil, as a couple of years ago I rebuilt some calipers to have on the shelf for spares. I was going to use them on the Sprite this year, but, when I took them down, found that they were GT6 calipers! The memory is the first thing to go, I guess. Needless to say, they wouldn't fit, no matter how big the hammer was. DUH!

That reminds me - I have a good VW mix-up story myself. I used to own a VW squareback and had rebuilt the motor at the Base Auto Hobby shop (Malmstrom AFB). This was about 1975-76 timeframe. The rebuild went well, but when I put the engine back in and wired it all up, it would not start when I turned the key. So, I sat there pondering the situation. I happened to have the key still in the "on" position, and started playing with the shifter as I was thinking what the problem could be. Suddenly, the starter started cranking and I put the clutch in to keep the car from lurching forward. At first I wasn't sure what had just happened, but quickly figured out that, with the key on, the car would start when I put the shifter in reverse...you guessed it, I had switched the wires for the starter solonoid and the reverse light switch (the two were located very close to each other). I also discovered that when I would turn the key to the "Start" position, the reverse (backup) lights would come on.
