Had our annual Ag Fair at Sturbridge Village. Area farmers and gardeners bring sample veg from their own gardens, all heirloom varieties over 200 years old. Also put out a couple tables from my own garden.
Edit: full harvest won't happen 'til after a frost. Leave 'em in the dirt as long as possible - more time to grow.
Judged the produce according to standards of the Worcester County Agricultural Society of 1830 - and at least back then ... SIZE MATTERS! The bigger the veg, the longer it will keep. We grow 'em to keep 'em over the winter and feed the family for the next 12 months. No Stop'n'Shop back in those days.
Most folks today make their grocery list every couple of days. We made it up once ever year.
