Post-War Other Hark, the Herald...

In my daily CL browse I found this Herald in the central valley. Looks like a diamond in the rough and a good price. I'm extremely tempted to go chase it myself, but my wife would be less than pleased........

...Still....what's the worst that could happen? If she kills me, she doesn't get to collect the life insurance, so I guess I have that safety net.....

John...If she kills you she won't get the insurance...
She will get the...HERALD! Gil NoCal (Go get it!)

John, if it's all there and cleans up nicely (without washing too much rust away), it has the makings of an inexpensive, very practical and enjoyable car! The price seems pretty good, particularly if it doesn't desperately need cosmetics (interiors are expensive).

If you go look and have any questions, PLEASE feel free to get back to me via the Forum or directly (e-mail, PM)!

Can you tell by looking if this is a removable hardtop/convertible or a FHC?

If you are referring to the red one, it is a real convertible. The roof frame is sort of visible.

I meant the grey one in Fresno.

The first car comes with the highly sought after removable hard top option! Car #1 is a FHC, car #2 is a true convertible. That said, you can unbolt the top on the FHC and remove it. At that point, the big difference is the (sorta) FHC doesn't have a place behind the rear seat to store the soft top. Hence, it wasnot Triumph's intent in the first place. If I had my pick of the two, I'd go with the FHC, it has an interior. (and it's not red or white) Or you could buy either one and just build this:

And it doesn't have the safety clips which keep the doors closed when going around corners!

The key words in that first ad: Not Running. How many crowns will it take to fix it, John? (That would be dentist-speak to you others......)

I had the top off of my hard top for a couple of weeks while waiting for new rubber seals. You can drive it that way but there are some extra supports missing if I remember what Andy told be that would weaken the car.

I say buy both so you can have parts.

As for the wife. "It is always easier to ask for forgiveness then permission."

Tom's right. Because you can remove the roof doesn't necessarily mean that you should remove the roof! The convertible body tubs were designed not only with extra "anti-burst" door catches but also other structural changes that help maintain some rigidity with the top folded. Needless to say, sedans do not have those structural changes.

In the US, sedans actually tend to be much rarer than convertibles, and that was true from the start, when convertibles often outsold sedans here in the US by maybe 4:1 or more. But there is much to be said for the true near-adult size back seat of a sedan and the 93% visibility with the large glass area and thin pillars (and the fact that you don't have to pray you can find an overpass to stop under whilst erecting the soft top in a sudden rainstorm)!
