Hardtop & Headliner Update

The new headliner has been installed and the top is back at A&E for a touch-up of my carrier brace blunder and then they will reinstall of the glass with new weather strips and replace all of the moldings with new as well.

I spoke to Allan this morning and we decided to wait until fall and then we will fit the top to the car. At that time, any windshield tilting or door glass realignment will be completed and everything should be set up permanently from there.

Eddie does great work at J.T. Leddy in Pawtucket, RI.

Everything is glued on nice and tightly and there are no wrinkles in the fabric.

This is a TRF headliner kit and it fits very well.

Don't lose these vents. They are impossible to find.

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Thank you Tom. I'll be happy when the glass is in and the moldings are all on and it's back home in my garage.

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

OK, back to A&E this sunny Friday before the Fourth of July and Allan is working away on the two marks that I created with the side panel brace.

hardtop091.jpg

The two marks on either side are now repainted and awaiting the clear coat that will go on next week.

While the paint is curing on those two spots, Allan is getting the rear glass ready to go in. The old rope trick again....

hardtop090.jpg

I was lucky to find a top with perfect glass in it. These even have the original "Triplex" etching in them.

hardtop095.jpg

That looks great on this side, so the other side will follow.

hardtop093.jpg

This is the rear glass, that is no longer available. At least not that I, or anyone on the forums knows about.

I located all of the new weatherstrips and moldings with attaching hardware at The Roadster Factory.

There is a very slight, outward bow that can be seen in this picture, which is what makes this so hard to get.

More to follow later today.........

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Looks great Paul - any chance you can find out what adhesive has been used for the headliner? I failed on my attempt earlier to trim my surrey backlight using Weldwood contact cement - I've been so disgusted with the outcome I still have it boxed up for a later attempt.

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Randy,

He keeps that adhesive in a sprat gun like you would paint a car with and sprays it as he works along the trim area. It dries pretty quickly. I'll try to find out of you can buy it in a spray can and get back to you when he returns next week.

Here are the final shots of the day just taken at the body shop. This is all on the web site as well. https://www.74tr6.com/hardtop.htm

Now it's starting to look like something.

hardtop099.jpg

These are the rivets that hold the rear and side moldings in place. They clamp over the round ring to stay in place.

hardtop098.jpg

One more to go in there to complete the rear riveting.

hardtop101.jpg

One of the rivets and the two "dog leg" moldings that go around the corners. These are, or were available at TRF.

hardtop102.jpg

Both door window weatherstrips are waiting to be installed.

hardtop103.jpg

These are the two inner trim panels that go along each rear side window.

hardtop105.jpg

The TRF Headliner Kit includes these as well as extra trim to cover them.

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Paul, excellent pictures, and congrats on the nice article about your wife's car... great story!

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Thanks Bob. It's nice to have a body shop owner who treats my car like it was his own. Maybe, even better....

He can't wait to mount the top and realign everything to fit. Maybe then, I'll powder coat the soft to frame and install a new canvas top. Maybe....

Re: Hardtop & Headliner Update

Grear looking hardtop Paul. More info for your First class website. Please let us know the type of glue used on the top. I hope to be working on the TR3 hardtop this winter.
