Happy thermostat

Last week I posted about overheating and traced the source to a failed thermostat. Replaced it and all went well on the test drive.

The replacement thermostat I put in is a 160F unit. When the car is up to temp, the temperature gauge is just out of the blue. With the original thermostat while it was working the temp gauge needle stayed about in the middle of the gauge.

The question is what do we feel about the 160F thermostat? Should I go back to 180? This is on a '79 - 1500.

Great question, with a lot of answers. I've asked all the variations of this one for the last couple yrs. Classic Motorsports has a great article about most of the answers. Seems if your car stays under 190 during the heat off the summer, its good. If you drive during the winter, you might want a thermostat that will cause your car to run a little warmer.
 
Cooler running cars do not last as long. 180 185 is ideal. Less than 200 is ok.

Cool does not allow the oil to lube properly.
 
Ok, it will be out with the 160 and in with a 185. Thanks for the help.
