HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!

*BOOM!*

A truly inspiring, patriotic event here is always a thrill to attend on July 4th. Here in Charlottesville (near the homes of Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison), there's always a citizen naturalization ceremony at Monticello. It's attended by a prominent judge who bestows U.S. citizenship upon about 50 foreign nationals, guest speakers and a few hundred onlookers.

Sam Watterson, the actor, is guest speaker today. I'm sure he'll be interesting. But the real entertainment is to hear the stories of some of the immigrants.

I hope all of you have an enjoyable fourth!

Good time to reflect.

Jerri & I are gonna get out & about today - might even spot an LBC or 2....haven't done that in a while.

Grandson (13 months) is participating in his first parade.....I had bought him a little car that he can ride in with a parent pushing some months ago - he loves it (you know the type - sportscar with a handle!)...daughter put a little American flag on it & hes gonna ride while she pushes him around the neighborhood - he'll be dressed in red, white, & blue!

As a naturalized citizen, I feel especially lucky on this day.

If you have a few minutes *listen* to the actual document by ~CLICKING HERE~

...and then click on "Listen".

I heard this earlier today....it is well worth your time and is truly wonderful.

You may recognise some of the readers.

Also, there is a nice Hi-Res graphic of the actual document and an explaination of a common error that is read at the end of the document.

Woman at work yesterday asked me, "Do you have Forth of July in Wales?"
"No, we just go from the third to fifth"

Happy Forth all, Happy Birthday/Anniversary USA.

Today was gray but the small family picnic was indoors. My best July 4 was in 1976. Spent a good part of the day in Hyde Park in London. There was a band concert with many Sousa marches. The day finished fireworks on the Thames as the British celebration of the US holiday. Fond memories!

How old is this phoole?

Barry, I'm here by sheer accident of birth. My ancestors made a decision I can hardly imagine. 'smits parents escaped th' Nazis, her da had a twin brother tossed into a camp... "She" born in Oldham. Here we sit... and my hat's off to you, sir.

In this "Day-and-Age" we're just twin sons of diff'rent mothers.

....we can do this again when it's time to burn th' Guy. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

That's why the name of the holiday is Independence Day, the fourth of July is just a date on the calendar.

In a similar vein, I have had people ask me if we had "Thanksgiving" in the UK, and in addition, more than one have complimented me on my command of the language, and ask how long it took me to learn English!

Hope you all had a good, happy and safe celebration!

Steve, I get back at them here by calling it insurrection day - enduring as I do much ribbing about it being 'the day we got rid of your lot'. For some reason they all seem to find this extremely amusing...

I only once (in nigh on 10 years) have been fortunate enough to have someone tell me to learn to speak English. I was laughing so hard I couldn't even come back with a snappy reply.

Thanks for the Red Skelton link Tony! That was really great!

My favourite Fourth was also in 1976 (the bicentennial). I was fortunate enough to have spent the evening on a boat in N.Y. harbour and got to witness the most spectacular pyrotechnics display of my life!!!

Same here Mike, ā€˜cept I was on the Potomac just off the Lincoln memorial in DC. There was a symphony playing and I think the firework show lasted about 3½ hours. Getting back to the marina at 12:30 AM was a little hairy. There were several hundred boats trying to do the same thing and the channel isn’t very wide in that area. A night I will always remember. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif
