I'll share my Marine Corps stories. They started recruiting me as a junior in high school. Long story short, as a senior I sat with two recruiters in my guidance counselors office and after all the offers were made and the talk over, the Gunny asked me where I was on a scale of 1-10 to wanting to be a Marine. I said I'm a solid 5, probably a 6. He said: "We need 7's, I don't think the USMC is for you".
As a USAF Airman I remember this: I was stationed at Fort George G. Meade. There were 4 barracks buildings and mine was next door to the USMC building. Every day at 0500 the Marines would be exercising, in unison, right outside my window. I recall snuggling up with airman Suzy (the cutest girl in my squadron) thinking...Yes, I need to thank the Gunny. He was so right.
My other USMC thought is more serious: One of my best friend's son in law is a Marine with 7 years under his belt. His job title is Assault-man. My count might be off by 1 plus or minus but I believe he's deployed to Afghanistan 5 times. So much combat, I don't want to list it in case I leave something out. What I see is the collective gasp that everyone in the families has when the deployment comes. The concern and fear ripple outward. While I think this Marine is the most amazing I've ever seen, I worry for him and his family every time. Real, painful worry.

I've known several relatives that are/were Marines. They are all tough as nails and a little off in the head, of course that could just be a Kerrick trait. Happy birthday USMC, I have the utmost respect for you guys.

A common attitude/trait amongst Marines is that the past tense ("were Marines") is not used, even if no longer on active duty. Once a Marine, always a Marine. I suspect your relatives would agree.

The past tense Marines in my family are all dead, I'm pretty sure that is the only time they cease to be Marines.
