MGB Hand turning the crank

OK guys...I can't seem to turn the MGB engine over very well by hand using the fan. I need to find the TDC marks so I can time it. Someone told me to use a 1 5/16" deep socket on the crank bolt. That's all well and good but I can't seem to find a socket that size to buy around here. Is this the correct size? Any idea what metric equivalent would work? Thanks. Gary
 
Gary, pull the plugs and you shouldn't need a socket - you should be able to do it by hand, or, roll it on the ground in gear.
 
Oh, and mark the order of the spark plug wires - don't ask me how I know
 
Gary - As JP suggests, remove all the plugs and then you won't have any problems rolling the engine over. I would suggest that you hold your thumb tight against the #1 plug hole as the roll the engine over - when you get to #1 on the compression stroke, the pressure will push you thumb off the hole, eliminating having to watch the rockers.

It needs to be a fairly shallow 1 5/16 socket, you can find them in 1/2 drive, at any good tool source, I have two Sunnex tool socket, both 1/2 drive, and even then I put one of them in the lathe and shorten it some more to make it a perfect fit for MGB race car.

Sears has a good selection of sockets and tools, usually one not too far away, if you like to dig and save money you can dig around at pawn shops, but that large a size might be a little hard to find there.
 
Thanks Hap...I borrowed one from a friend but, as you know, it needed to be shorter :smile:.
