MGA Hand brake handle disassembly

Has anyone ever actually disassembled the MGA hand brake lever internals? From the schematic, I would think the button unscrews from the rod, but either I'm mistaken, or mine is badly seized. Don't want to destroy it.
 
Should unscrew. Have you tried a leather strap wrench?
