Hamburg, PA - Jim Thorpe Classic Car Run

Offline
This is really, really advance notice but I always like to reserve dates in advance. I do this rally each year with my MINI club, but last year I decided to do a classic car version. We had so much fun, we're going to do it again! The run is open to any car 25 years or older.

The date: Saturday, September 15, 2007 (rain date: September 22, 2007)
The meeting place: The Cracker Barrel in Hamburg, PA
The time: 10:00am (driver's meeting at 9:55am Please arrive by at least 9:45)

Join us for a scenic cruise to the quaint town of Jim Thorpe, PA. We'll enjoy a drive along some back roads in Berks, Schuylkill, and Carbon counties in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we'll have a couple stops for lunch and a scenic overlook of Jim Thorpe, before we roll into town for the climax of the drive.

If you've never been to Jim Thorpe, you are in for a treat. It is a small town originally built up around the coal industry, and famous for it's gravity railroad that, at one time (way back when), made it the second largest tourist destination in the country, behind Niagara Falls! After a decline, the town has been reborn once again as a tourist destination, offering quaint shops, restaurants, and B&B's. Tour the Packer Mansion - the house that inspired the haunted house in Disney World. Or make a weekend of it and enjoy some of the biking or whitewater rafting that draw thousands to the town each year. Like trains? Take one of the scenic train rides that leave from town at numerous times during the day.

Additional Jim Thorpe Info and pics here

This will be a shared event with a couple of the local classic car clubs I belong to. We only had 9 cars last year, so I thought I'd open up the invitation to a larger audience this year.

To sign up, just post here or PM me. It will be interesting to see who's bringing what. An updated list will be maintained at the bottom of this post.

Directions to the Cracker Barrel:
- I-78 to exit 29 for Rt. 61 N toward Pottsville
- Right at first light after ramp (Jetson Dr)
- Bear right after the gas station (on your right) and follow that road to the Cracker Barrel

Lunch will either be a BBQ at my parent's farm along the route OR a stop at a local restaurant. If we have a relatively small group, we'll eat at the restaurant. If I get a bigger response, we'll do the BBQ, rather than overwhelming the restaurant with a large crowd. Either way, we will stop at my parents' place to at least stretch our legs and take a little break. It's also a great photo op to get some nice shots of all the cars.

What you need to bring:
1. Two way radio - to receive instructions, information or ask for help if your car decides to be tempermental
2. Full tank of gas (you can top off near the starting point)
3. $5 for parking in Jim Thorpe. Sometimes they charge, sometimes they don't, but be prepared.
4. Spare parts, oil, coolant, whatever other fluids may leak out of your car, tools, a sense of humor, and some patience. Hopefully nobody will have any problems but it helps to be prepared.

Other useful info:

When you arrive at Cracker Barrel:
1. Please arrive no later than 9:45. We will be leaving at 10am.
2. Please come sign in with me. You'll need to sign a waiver, and pick up your route sheet.

At the BBQ/Rest stop:
1. We will be parking on the grassy field to your right after you go up the driveway.
2. There is one bathroom for your use, located in the house; straight back as you enter the front door.
3. Feel free to wander about the grounds. The grist mill down the hill from the parking area was built in the 1700's, for any of you history buffs out there. There is a little historical marker posted in front of it. The mill no longer functions.

Long distance travellers:
For those who'd like to drive out the night before, there is a hotel just up the road from the Cracker Barrel:

Microtel Inn & Suites
(610) 562-4234
50 Industrial Dr
Hamburg, PA 19526

I suggest making reservations at least a couple weeks in advance. The Microtel is the ONLY hotel in the area and it fills up with people looking to head across the highway to Cabelas.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or post here.

Confirmed so far:
1. Jerseygirl - Triumph Spitfire
2. Ian F - Volvo 1800ES
3. Sharon - Triumph TR3

I'm in Allentown, if I'm free of kid activities then I'm in (too early to know).

That's great! I don't really expect too many people (except a few of my crazy friends) to commit this early but I wanted to get it on the calendar. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

OK, for some reason it appears that I can't edit my first post, so here's an updated attendance list as of 2/15/07:

1. Jerseygirl - Triumph Spitfire
2. Ian F - Volvo 1800ES
3. Coopersharon - Triumph TR3
4. Marty - MGB
5. Jim P. - Triumph Spitfire
6. poolmike - Mini (MK1)
7. Tyler - Volvo 122
8. Mike K. - International Scout (or Chevelle)

Robyn,

FYI: I posted this event on the "British Car Club of the Lehigh Valley" and the "Keystone Region MG Club" websites' British Car Events calendar as you asked. Looking forward to it!

Let me know if you get any responses from there.

Best regards,
Marty

OK, just got an email from another club wanting to join in with this run and it got me thinking...

A few updates:

We WILL be doing a BBQ lunch at my parent's place. I'm getting a lot of buzz about this event on several other clubs and forums and I have a feeling we're going to have way too many people to squeeze into the local restaurant like we did last year.

Lunch will be $5 per person and the menu will include:
Hamburgers
Hot dogs (all beef)
Grilled chicken
Soda, spring water
Chips/pretzels
Possibly some pepper cabbage, sauerkraut, baked beans, etc.
Ice cream - wonderful ice cream from a local shop!!

That means I need to figure out what people will want for lunch so...

In order to coordinate this across all these clubs and websites I'm going to handle registration the old fashioned way... via snail mail. The registration form will include your info, your lunch choices (and lunch payment), and the liability waiver. Neat and clean so there's no paperwork the day of the run. Registration forms will be due to me no later than 9/1 so I can tally up the food selections. Money will be refundable until 9/8 after which time, I will begin buying the food.

Hi Robyn;

I will most likely Participate: A bit Too early to tell: I only live 20min East of Jim Thorpe: I would really enjoy the Tour from the Cracker Barrel (I`m about 1hr drive from RT. 78/61):

Will You be at the "Moss Motors" Spring Fling in Dover? I would really enjoy Meeting with Yourself: Its nice to put a Face behind these Words; Don`t You think?

Sorry, been away from the site for a bit. To answer all the questions...

Marty, so far you are the ONLY officially registered participant, though I know at least 10 people who will definitely be joining us. They just haven't sent in their registrations yet. I'm sure numerous others will also join in as the date gets closer. There was quite a bit of interest from some of the NASS members as well. I don't expect much registration activity until later in the summer when people have a better idea of what their plans will be.

Russ, I don't even know when the Moss Spring Fling is (if it hasn't already happened) but I have no plans to be at any events for the next month or so. We're still desperately trying to get my Spitfire back in one piece before Carlisle, though it's not looking good at this point. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif We'll have to put faces to names in September if you decide to join us. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/yesnod.gif Hope you can make it. We had a great time last year!

Hi Robyn;

The "SpringFest" (Moss Sponsored) is May 5th in Succassana, NJ: I`m hoping to attend the "Carlisle Import / Replicar" Show May 18th:

Hope your Spitfire is "Good to Go" for that!

See Ya All Later;

Regards, Russ

Well, hopefully the Spitfire's road-ready by Carlisle. If you make it to Carlisle, visit the Keystone Reion MG club tent on the British car field. Saturday is cookout day!

So I'm the first registrant for September! Cool. Do I get #1 on my car then? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Looking forward to it.

Well, the Spitfire did NOT make it to Carlisle and still is not back in one piece. I FINALLY got the last part of the wiring harness I've been waiting for since early March. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif

My big 7-day charity drive/MINI run is also behind me now so we can finally get back to working on the Spitfire. I'm bummed we've missed so much nice driving weather already. But Baldrick WILL be ready for this run in September!!!

I've now got 2 people officially registered for this event and I'll keep bumping this thread up to the top as the registration deadline approaches. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Hi There Robyn;

Would You Please Up-Date Me relative to the "Potential" date for Jim Thorpe:

Also; There is a Friend of mine who has a "1967 Alfa-Romeo Duetto Spider": Would He & His car be welcome for the Cruise?

Thanx, Russ /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif
