I just finally got around to applying with Hagerty. What I told them is that I will just be driving my cars locally. The TR8, 8,000 miles per year, the TR6 and TR4 locally about 3,000 per year. I talked with them today and was told that with the kind of driving I do they won't insure me? They just insurse collectors.

Currently I have my cars insursed with AAA, but I don't carry thieft or colision. I have 5 vehicles insured. My other two have collision. I pay about $2000 per year for all 5.

What do you think my options are? Those of you with multiple cars, what are you doing?

I have Haggerty and they were very clear that they did not take cars used as daily drivers. I have two other cars that get 30,000 and 15,000 miles each yearly, so the TR6 qualifies as a "collector" car, so to speak.

Less miles, less potential liability, I suppose.

They were still over $300 per year cheaper than my previous carrier with a LOT more coverage. I got them through my local agent who had my previous insurance.
 
I just sent in a $100.00 check to Hagerty for another year of full coverage,Last year i did pay them $140.00 for the special flatbed towing package but i never used it.I own a 1980 Spit that gets driven only ocassionaly mostly just local & some infrequent long distance driving never over 75 miles to shows.My primary interest is preservation after restoration.Actually Hagerty surprised me this year & gave me an increased value no charge from $6500.00 to $8000.00.AND every year i send them an updated photo.Hagerty is wonderful people to do business with.Actually the WhiteLightning is a contingency vehicle when all of my other cars are in use.Cheers Mates...Ken
 
Ok... I'm at a bit of a loss. I can understand them not wanting to insure the TR8 as I said that I would be putting close to 8000 miles on it per year and using it as a back-up vehicle, driving it to work once a week.

For the TR6 and TR4 I said that I would be driving to shows, the movies, breakfast and just around town. As I said, they told me they only insure collectors?

Call again and talk to someone different. This sounds like a trainee got your call.
 
Larry - just Friday I called Hagerty and spoke with "Emily". She took my information, requested I email her some photos, and she raised my agreed value from $10K to $15K on the spot. (Figured I should at least insure TeeYah for the NADA middle-value amount.) I have Hagerty's collector car policy with expanded service (towing, etc.). Was happy to learn their expanded service covers *all* my cars.

Is $15K the right amount? I don't have a clue, other than the NADA values. And Emily said Hagerty usually refers to NADA values when assigning coverage.

I agree with all the other guys. They're a great group of people with comprehensive, affordable coverage.

I got the same story from them. If you drive your car to stores, work, etc. No coverage. That's why I still have regular old insurance for my TR6.

To me, it's just not worth having if I'm told when and where I can drive the thing.
 
I can't believe the quote I just got on the Haggerty web site. It is a fraction of the cost I am currently paying. Unbelievable. The one thing I couldn't find was how many miles per year are permitted. I plan to use my car for pleasure driving only, but sometimes that is a very long cruise. I could put 2-3,000 miles a year on it. I wish it were clear before I call them.

You should be fine (though check with an agent). When I got my 6 in '05 Haggerty had a mileage limit of 2k per year. They got rid of that limit in '06. My agent said they figured the majority of people don't drive their cars much and the rest of us are so careful with them that their risk exposure is low.

Roman is correct in what he says. I'm paying about 1/3rd of my previous premium and I have MUCH more coverage AND the special flatbed towing insurance for all of my cars.

They just don't want the risk of a daily driver in the pool with the limited usage of others, especially if they are guaranteeing the high value in the event of theft or total accident. My previous carrier would only give me $12,000 if my car was totaled. I got double that amount as soon as they saw my web site.

When I talked to them and he asked if I could verify the mileage and I said I could prove it with invoices for service and inspections. He then asked how many miles that I had on the car. At the time it was 53,000 and the car was 31 years old. That's just over 1,710 miles per year. He laughed and asked what coverage I wanted and said drive it all I want, just like I have in the past.
 
Excellent. That is number one on my list when I return in less than two weeks!! I can't wait, and praying for a little Indian Summer!
 
As everyone above has said, it's largely how you present how you're going to use and protect your car. They appear to be much more flexible on the mileage limits than they were years ago.

When I contacted Hagerty I assured them that my LBCs were collector cars, kept in a locked garage, taken to shows and for occasional pleasure drives. I inquired about the "occasional" drive to work and was told that would be "OK" as long as the LBCs did not become my regular transportation.

I use my LBCs as weekend cars and this keeps their annual mileage way below anything that would be questioned. IF I were to have a minor parking lot incident... I'm sure I'd fix it myself. If I had a major crash on the way to the grocery store, I'd describe the outing as a pleasure drive and file the claim.

ANYTIME I drive my LBCs it's a pleasure. I don't drive these cars because I HAVE to.
 
In Canada, there is a company called Lant insurance.
They have no mileage restrictions as most owners are like all of us and only use the cars on occasions. If I were looking for coverage, call back and get a quote and explain these are not your daily cars. Their only concern seems to be how often these cars are on the road.

There will be "NO ONE" that will offer you Classic Car Ins. if you tell them your going to drive 8K mi per yr:

Hagerty is a good operation...I've also used another carrier and Hagerty was cheaper with no mileage limits.

You have to have one vehicle (daily driver)insured with a regular insurance carrier in order for Hagerty to insure your collector cars. Their agents who frequent many car shows have always assured me that I can use my car for maintenance driving including using them for work...but not on a daily basis.
 
I have Hagerty as well. I am very please with them. I pay $140/yr for an agreed value of $8500 with the towing. My towing includes my Triumph only. My other cars have towing through Allstate. Allstate wanted $350 to insure the Triumph.

Hagerty didn't seem real picky. There biggest issue was that you had a regularly insured daily driver car. They also have a neat newsletter they send out, as well as online games and contests. They do "push" the hobby a bit. I think the more cars you own the more they will make....
