Guys who blow but don't know

"Nice car, I used to have one of those ... what is it?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/square.gif

He probably forgot what it was because it was so painful. Many "owners", back when they were knew hated these cars because they were so undependable. Any time you meet someone who says "I used to have on of these" ask them if they kicked it every time it flooded, the wipers seized, or the door wouldn't close....

Why are so called "car" people so hard to talk to? So many of the people I have met working on cars and at shows are self absorbed, and have little ability to communciate with members of the human race. (except to boast their knowledge of arcane factory details, which the factory probably didn't even know about.)
Fortunately, my experiance with TRiumph owners has been anything but this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Of course I've never come across anyone like that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif. Like the ones who try jump starting cars that crank just fine. Somebody got annoyed at me when my Midget vapor locked and I declined their jump start offer. "Well how do YOU know it doesn't need a jump start?". Gee, maybe because supplying 12 volts to an already healthy battery really isn't going to help the fact that the mechanical fuel pump isn't pumping the vaporized fuel? We silly engineers, what do we know? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Same here. And, equally fortunately, I've not had that sort of experience at most any kind of car show I've been to over the years. Maybe you're going to too many P*rsch* shows?

Lately, I've been as likely or more so to attend local "cruise-in" events. You know, some classics, some rods and customs, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Not surprsingly, mine's usually the only Triumph Herald and often the only import there. But there's never been any snobbery of any kind. I enjoy low-mileage original Corvairs and T-bucket roadsters and "James Dean" Mercs...and most everyone seems to enjoy the Herald. Maybe upstate New York just has a great mix of car people? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Some years ago I saw the only Ferrari SUV I've ever seen parked in front of the shop on Magnolia Hill in Seattle. The car was red with tan interior (what else!).

Do you mean the Lamborghini LM0002 SUV. There are a few of these in Seattle. I know there's a red one with tan interior that is driven frequently.

A few weeks ago I had a weird interaction at a car show. I had my '69 Corvette and there were two guys talking in front of my car. One guy said that he had a '68 427/435hp way back when, and asked if mine was a tripower car. I explained it too had been a 427/435hp car, but now had a 454ci that put out a more real and modern 435hp, so more than the original engine. The one guy said "it can't be more than the original, since the original was also 435hp, and was underrated."

I explained that the original was 435 -- but rated as SAE Gross flywheel hp, which worked out to be around 315 rear-wheel HP for a 4spd and 300 for an automatic (w/the power-sapping TH-400) like mine was. Mine currently is more like
360 RWHP, and gauging from the fact it beats my 350netfwhp '02 to 60, it makes sense.

He got an angry look and said "you don't know what the -bleep- you're talking about. These were underrated, and I know they put out more than 300 -bleeping-hp, they were 435 real hosepower." And he turned quickly and walked away.

The other guy just stood there, and I said..."I suppose I could have explained that it was the L88 that he's thinking about as being indeed underrated from the factory at 430hp, and in actuality were about 520hp at the flywheel...and using the industry standard SAE gross-to-SAE net conversion (that American manufacturers began using in '72) plus the SAE's standard drivetrain loss percentage, you get to these numbers, which are supported by years of dyno tests, but I don't think anything will change his mind."

I love the "frequently wrong, but never in doubt" types.

That hits the nail on the head Sammy!

You think you guys meet a lot of these types at car shows???

Try hanging out with I.T. guys....

I have programmed a macro on my computer so that if I click a button it sends a quiet message to my sysop back in the server room and he'll call my phone and we pretend that my services are needed immediately. It's the only way to get away from some of these types who like to camp out at my desk and go on and on about computer minutae.

Hi,

There are several of those Lamborghini here in Silicon Valley, too. It's an odd looking vehicle!

No, the car in Seattle was definitely a Ferrari SUV. Even though I hadn't had my coffee yet, I spent a little time walking around it. There was no sign of the owner to chat with, unfortunately.

Occasionally at out local Starbucks an unusual grey "Ferrari" shows up. It's actually a Mitsubishi GT that the owner has wishfully rebadged. I think it's got more Ferrari emblems on it than you could find in the factory on any given day. A bad case of "Enzo envy", methinks!

Cheers!

It might have been one of those Laforza SUVs from the 80s. Even though these former Italian Army SUVs were Ford V8 powered, I can imagine someone putting a Ferrari badge on it...or maybe transplanting a 308 engine into one too.
