Gutless Sprite.

G'day bugedd,
sorry for the late reply. I have been busy getting my 100 ready for the trip to Mount Panorama for the AH National Meet. Unfortunately, we had to cancel at the last minute.
Yes, I think the vacuum advance may be the culprit. Even if it isn't, it won't hurt to check it.

You have been given many good suggestions, I will add one that may not be the most likely, but hasn't been mentioned and is pretty easy to check. When motoring about like a wild man in my first Sprite many, many years ago I managed to crush the exhaust pipe as it curves to get out of the engine compartment. Performance was quite noticeably weaker and the car felt like a rocket ship once I swapped in a new one. I think the entire pipe and muffler assembly was about $15 bucks or so (1979 ish).
